Buck needs to make some 500's, That is all!

Thank you Sit. At any rate this should give Rick some options to consider. I still carry one of the above knives daily as they suit my taste. DM

No I definitely wouldn't change the blade, just make the handle profile proportionate to it as the 501.

I keep tossing over the heritage I'd like to get it because it's a different handle, and has the s30v, but the color just does nothing for me, at all.

Personally I like the profile of the Buck lite Max's for the exception of the kick up on top where the handle meets the blade, but it appears it would be ergonomical with it.

Cutting down the frame on the 500 to suit your taste makes sense to me. As pretty as the knife is (and it is), every time I open mine, it feels like too little blade for too much frame, or vice versa. I would like to see a 500 rebladed with a 442 or 482 blade and would love to see a cut down 500 frame.

Regarding the kick on the 482 and 486 Bucklite Max folders, I really like they way they feel. Given a choice between the 500 and the 482 for extended carving, I'd take my 482, largely because of the kick (and finger groves on the bottom). (But, I prefer the wide flat back of the 112/110 to either.)

David, thanks for posting those side by each shots. I wish Buck would make that 110 drop point blade available as a normal production offering.

What model did they take the profile of the 112 drop point that you're showing? It looks even fuller than the 442. In any event, your shot shows how the 500 looks (to my eyes) like it runs out of blade too early. Actually, yours looks it has more belly than my 500 does.

perhaps there is a glimmer of hope yet ???

Sit,

I've been thinking about this as this thread has been ambling along and I have to admit that I can understand why the 500 is gone from production and why it's not in the custom offerings.

IME, the small size difference in actual size between the 501 and 500 translates into HUGE difference in terms of feel and perception by those around me. The 501 is a pocket knife size and there are almost no situations where its use raises eyebrows. On the other hand, the 500 is in the "real knife" size range. I most often carry knives in this size range, but I am aware of eyebrows going up when I use them (not that this stops me). The smaller 501 and 503 make perfect sense as "executive" or "gentleman's" knives and suitable for suits but, imo, the 500 is not.

If I were listing Buck folders in the 3" blade range to offer as customs, I would pick the Vantage (premium steels and premium scales) first and the 112 second (and drop point should be an option).
