I just received a NIB Buck Nighthawk (black, plain-edge), that I traded a Cold Steel Gunsite II for (thanks Clayton H.!), and I just have to say that this is one EXCELLENT knife! (I wish the sheath was convertable to "Left-hand", but ya can't have it "all", I guess...

.).

I really can't understand why this FINE knife is never mentioned when someone on the Forums is looking for a good "camp, hiking, defensive, etc. knife".

The blade is a perfect length and shape, is razor-sharp, made out of pretty good steel, and looks to be very stout.

...And the handle with the "rubber" inserts...That IS the most COMFORTABLE/slip-proof handle that I have EVER had my hand wrapped-around!

This Buck Nighthawk has been moved to the "top of MY list"...

I am very new to the forums, but let me tell you that the nighthawk I had came with a left handed sheath. Unfortunately I sold it (being right handed...), but they are available.
Hope it helps,
Rob

You are NOT alone Dann! I have a couple, one in black oxcide and one plain, it's just a great knife. I'm not sure why folks don't talk about them more, as they are easily the equal of many more expensive "tactical" models put out by any number of other mfgs. I just wish we could get one in a premium steel from Pete's, that would top off a knife that is already great.

Dann,

I have an older model Nighthawk but with the older bead-blasted finish and feel pretty much about mine as you have expressed about yours.

I do not know either why it does not get the attention that it should. Along with the attributes you have noted and included in your use of the word "stout", the full .25" blade thickness makes this a really impressive tool.

Considering its price I think that it is a real bargain compared to similar tactical knives offered by other makers.

I agree with Brian. The knife is very versatile, and comfortable, but it would be nice to get one in ATS-34. I read somewhere that the Nighthawk was Buck's entry into the SEAL knife competition, but that it was in ATS-34 (or equivalent).
That would make a great all around knife even better.

The knife was designed in hopes of getting a contract with the Seals. We still have some of the prototypes laying around. When we didn't get the Seals, we decided to make a commercial version. Early on, the knife got a bad rap because the edge was very thick, just how the Seals wanted it. A thick edge dulls quicker and can be harder to reedge so folks did not like the knife. We have thinned it out since then.

Joe,

I'll e-mail you my "snail-mail" address if you'd like to send me one of the "Seal Nighthawk Prototypes" that you (Buck) has just "laying-around".

BTW...I DO have a Birthday (my 47th) coming-up in July, and one of those prototypes would sure be a GREAT "gift"...

I would be very interested in one of the "prototypes" as well, especially since they are just laying around.
It is a wonderful knife in search of the "new" generation of steels...
Sign me up,

Yep. The Nighthawk is a pretty good knife. It definitely is a good value for the money.
I have an older model (1995) with the thicker edge. I thinned it out. Other than that I wouldn't change anything about it. Great blade shape, length, and grind. The handle is sturdy and very comfortable.
I know that some people complain about the sheath, but there's nothing wrong with it. Sure, it's not some super-duper tactical sheath, but it works well as it is and it keeps the cost down compared to Kydex. Perhaps Buck could offer Nighthawk buyers a choice between the regular sheath and an upgraded one, much as Ka-bar does with some of their knives.

Dann, Hoodoo just hooked me up with a plain beadblast, and I am knocked out at the quality of this knife (and sheath!)! "Solid" is the first descriptive word that comes to mind, followed by "Comfortable". Mine came quite sharp out of the box, and a few passes on the sharpmaker have made it formidable. I'm going to ask Chiro about making a hi rise sheath for me so it will semi-conceal a little better(semi- conceal:become less obtrusive for normal belt wear. Such carry is legal here if not concealed). SMKW has these for $29.99 right now! What a giveaway!!!. Buck has a real winner here, and I am very proud to have one. (To the tactical guys: what would keep this blade from being a "fighter"?)

Heck,it IS a fighter. Maybe not up to Mad Dog standards, but then, what is?

I like it fine and suspect it would stand up to most problems encountered in real survival etc. situations. This is of course, only my opinion.

Well, I sent my Nighthawk off this morning to visit Uncle Chiro for a speedy scabbard! I don't think he's doing much public work right now, but I'll let you know how it turns out.

Having been involved in the development process I have to agree this is one solid knife. Edge 2000 was critical for this knife and it continues to sell.

It has found a niche as a very functional work knife in our tactical category

When did they start making the nighthawk with a multicolored handle? Just saw one in a local hunting store.
oops, just saw other post.

Trying is just a noisy way of not doing something.

I have a nighthawk on the way because of all the good things said on this post, but I have a question. I have seen a few posts where nighthawk owners said that their blade exploded when doing light prying or when some guy stabbed a dresser when trying to break the wood apart. This might be abuse but they say that the blade is very brittle. Is this true???

Nighthawk arrived today. WOW!!! This thing is a beast! And with edge 2000 it is shaving sharp right out of the box! 1/4 in. thick!!!
Seeing this and holding it is far better than what I expected from the pics in SMKW.
I am very pleased!

K man,
I'm glad to hear that you like your knife! To answer your earlier question, i have not heard of any of these "explosions." We do not get that many of them back really.
Take care,
