Buck or Ka-bar?

I have several Bucks and several Ka-Bars including almost every variation of their Next Generaltion knife in 12C27. Why did they switch to 440A anyway? Anyway I digress. I also have a KaBar Impact in D2. Yes D2 is harder to sharpen but it will hold it's edge longer than almost anything else. I have a heavy Buck Intredpid (I think that's what it's called off the top of my head) that is so large and heavy that it actually has a special chopping blade on the back of the blade. I don't think it's in production anymore I am not sure. That thing os more of a sharpened crowbar than anything else I don't think you could hurt it. It's still 420 though so it's edge needs more maintenance than some harder steels. Given thechoise of the knives referenced by the original poster... I would go with the KaBar I'm afraid though. It's just about the perfect GP knife in that blade size... If you could afford it go for the D2 one or the new Kabar D2 Combat Impact... (6") It's well worth the extra cost. To sharpen it best though you may with to invest in a diamond honing set...

Edited to add this comment: If you can find a Buck Intrepid and don't mind it's weight... it is also an Excellent choice but be warned it is heeeaavvyyy for a knife it's size, the blade is a full 1/4" think and it is a full tang knife....

I know this has been mentioned, but it really sounds like for what you want in toughness and edge holding, you might want to consider a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp. Since I believe you said you already have Bucks and Ka-Bars, it would also expand your collection.

Swamp rat knives are good bang for the bucks, if you can find find a second hand camp tramp, go for it, otherwise, if you want it new, be prepared to wait a loooong time before it gets delivered to you... :)

Other good choice would be a Puma White Hunter or a Puma Automesser, those are really good knives made of 1.4110 stainless steel (which somewhat compares to 440B). The heat treatment made by Puma is exemplary and all their blades are tested to a hardness of 58 HRc. The blade shape is really optimum to deal with any camp chore even with its 6".
