Buck Selkirk landed today.

Thanks for the review. It's a great looking knife.

Here's hoping that Buck makes more flat grind knives!

QUESTION: Can Buck make flat ground knives in their Idaho plant? Is this why the Selkirk is imported?

Off the top of my head the Thug and Hoodlum are both flat grind blades and both are U.S. made so yes, buck can make a flat grind blade in Idaho. You'd have to ask Buck to be sure but I'd say the Selkirk is made where it is because that's the only place Buck can make it at the price they need to sell it. As with most businesses I'm sure Buck looks at what the consumer wants, what the consumer will pay for it and how they can make it and put it in stores at the price point they need to make everyone happy.

Any idea what the release date is on this knife? Everywhere I've looked says pre-order. I know people that work in the industry have been picking them up, but they don't seem to be available everywhere yet. Anybody heard anything?

I just did a search and it is In Stock at the outdoor store with a fish in it's name as well as the Big River site

Bear, thanks for taking the time to produce this write up with pictures. Ha, wishing for that green grass too. I like the shape, flat grind, handle and kydex sheath. With a fire rod! Great! Is the handle material micarta? That's a attractive package. DM

I picked one up at my local knife store. He said he got four and sold them all within a week. I was fortunate enough to get the last one. I have seen them at some of the on-line retailers, but they sold out pretty quickly.

Thanks, the more I handle the Selkirk, the more I like it. Somebody put a lot of thought into this one at Buck!

Selkirk: named after the rugged mountain range in Idaho. Notwithstanding, the Scottish family was instrumental in establishing colonies in the Hudson Bay area under the direction of Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk. DM

Got one off Amazon this week, they sold out really fast!
The most ergonomic handle of of all the Buck knives i own. Actually in the top 5 for ergonomics of ALL the knife brands i own. Right up there with my Spyderco Bushcraft knife. The Selkirk should go on to be an instant new classic for Buck.

Intellectually, I know this shouldn't be a deal breaker for me, but I really, really, really wish this knife was made in Idaho.

I am doubting instant classic from China myself.

So an American design but made in China is by default incapable of becoming a classic? And i guess if it suddenly is manufactured in the U.S that somehow changes? For a second forget nationality and judge something for what it is not where its made. The Chinese are just as able to manufacture quality as any other nation and even some American products have problems with quality control. No one country has exclusive claim to either high or low quality manufacturers.I have two copies of the same traditional Remington pattern lockback folder from a single American knife manufacturer that are in the $100-ish range, both look pretty at a distance but the blade play is pretty bad, one ground with an excessively thick edge (necessitating a regrind) with both the fit and finish is inconsistent. I have a Boker made in China copy of the same pattern, less than half that price that has zero blade play and superior fit and finish. Any way we should just forget this drift off topic or this thread will get moved or locked by a mod. Hopefully the discussion will actually return to discussing the actual knife. Either way I won't comment further. Peace! :)
