Buck Selkirk v.s. Buck Vanguard

@ Pinnah:

Thanks a lot for enlightening me. Posts like yours are one of the big reasons why I like this forum so much! Your post also reminded me that I still have a fully convex bushcrafter sitting in a closet. I havent used it much because it was quite expensive and I still find convexed knives hard to sharpen. Your post has inspired me to take it out more often and to practice more!

@ everyone else:

I figured this needn't be the end of our little fairy tale. Once in a while I'll order something from the U.S., in cases where it's something special and I'll bite through the additional hassle and cost. As I've remarked before, I've been eying the 101, although I'm not sure what to think of it. The vendor that's offering the 101 is also offering a lot of other mouthwatering pieces. Amongst their offerings is the Selkirk for a very reasonable price.

I don't order from the U.S. lightly, so I'll have to wait until the time (and the currency ratings) is (are) right.

I've bought a more local brand to sate my appetite in the mean time, a hunting knife with stag scales a high flat grind and a leather sheath.

I've also just sold an old collection of Magic the Gathering cards, and got a little more than I was expecting, so maybe that'll smooth things over with the missus :)

On a side note: What are the rules for mentioning other knife brands and shops/vendors on this sub-forum? Should I shy away from mentioning them?

Lodd, I know very little, something I demonstrate with great regularity.

This said, I do have opinions that are rooted in my own personal experience. My recommendation always is to buy more inexpensive knives and to test the differences personally. The way to learn to sharpen a convex blade is to start with blades you don't worry about wrecking (at least it was for me). Knives like the Moras are dirt cheap and convex easily with some patience and a decent course stone. If you wreck a cheap knife, who cares? Then use them side by side yourself and see it matters to you. The differences I feel don't matter as much to others and that they matter to me shouldn't matter to you in the least. Only thing that should matters to you is what you feel when you try different grinds.

There is always the Ron Hood series. Excellent bushcrafting

Punk.

I would love to put a Punk through its paces.

I suspect that if the Selkirk is too expensive for Lodd, then the Punk would be way too much.

I suspect that if Buck had followed Hood's design lead and produced the Reaper, Compadre, Endeavor and new Mesa with full flat grinds like the Hood line, there would be a lot more buzz about those Bucks on the Wilderness, Outdoor and General forums as competitors to ESEE, Becker and Condor.

I know I must sound like an annoying skipping record (dated myself) but I think the hollow grind has been pretty much rejected by that community.

I would choose the Vanguard over the Selkirk. We have the black rubber handled Vanguard in our home.

I hope that you find your Ranger #113 knife. (That is my every day carry knife so I am biased.)

So, I bought a knife from another brand. It's beautiful and was a good deal, but it's no Buck. I had to fix the grind on it to get it to some semblance of sharpness. And now I find myself still having an itch for a good quality Buck knife.

I find myself looking at the Mini Mentor in cherry wood:

Or I could go for a Buck 102 or a 105. I'm leaning towards the 105 because the 102 looks so similar to the 110 in size and blade shape that I'm not sure what the added value would be over the 110 I already own.

I would like to try the punk if I could get my hands on one easily, but I must admit I prefer the more classic looks of the knives mentioned above.

Still haven't found my 113, though. I wonder where it could be...
