I know there's a Buck forum, however, I'd like to post here if it's OK. I've always liked Buck knives, I use a 309 for everything up to deer. I use a 303 for blackbear, my dad uses a 307, my sister and mom use a 301. My brother is a heretic and uses a Case. I know a guy who is in Iraq (I met him at Penn State) he said he field dressed a goat with his knife (a very small Case).
I'd like to get him a new knife, and was wondering which size should I get him?
Anyone who is a real traditionalist have ideas? The knife he's using is too nice (even if it is a Case), to have anything happen to it.
Thanks.

The size thing is a real personal thing... I prefer 2 bladed slip joints like the 6207 mini trapper or medium jack 62032.
I've never found anything that I can't do with 2 blade choices.
However there are many that swear by 3 bladed versions. Nothing wrong with that. If I do carry a 3 bladed stockman, I prefer a little more size, like the 6347 in my av picture....
So many choices and none of them are wrong...

A good solid choice are the older Schrade Old Timers. Well made and decent steel (carbon) that takes an edge like a razor.
Can still be found for a lower price than most older Case knives.

Case does make some nice new knives that have CV steel and nice scales at a very reasonable price too...

Although I don't own any, there are a lot of folks that seem happy with the Buck slipjoints.
As far as being to nice to use, I broke from that way of thinking some time back and am much happier. I get a lot more enjoyment out of my knives when they are in pocket and being used... YMMV

OK, Everyone gather the stones to throw I am about to speak blasphemy...............

Since he is overseas and might become seperated easily from said knife, buy him a China Buck, metal is good, finish is really nice. Price is cheap. a 382 trapper or a 389 Canoe might fit the bill.(Canoe comes in Black Pearl). At some store with a mart in its name.

....look out there went a stone ..............Hand him a nice ole Red,White and Blue made 301 when he walks off the runway back here in the US of A.

I have to admit, for real use I certainly like the larger slipjoints. Something like a large Trapper (two-blade) or Stockman (3-blade) should be a hit with anyone who fancies traditional knives. Buck, Case, and Queen all make nice knives in these patterns that don't cost too much ($40-60).

The knife he's using is too nice (even if it is a Case), to have anything happen to it.
Huh. I can't realy think of a Case knife that is "too nice" to use, unless maybe he has one of those limited run knives with semiprecious stone scales (lapis, red coral, jasper, etc.) or damascus blades? Every one of my Case knives (including my mother-of-pearl Peanut) is a "user". ;)

Hi,

What ever brand and style of slippie you get, i do agree with 300 bucks. Don't get something too expensive.

I have a China made Buck Mini-Trapper and a large Stockman. Both are very nice users and hold a good edge. I can't seem to find USA made Buck slippies around me. :( Mostly though I find myself carrying a Case CV Canoe. I really, really, like that knife.

Be very careful about buying a knife for somebody that you think needs one. Size AND style are extremely personal, and what you may think is the greatest thing since flint, may be a albatross to another. If he's using a small Case now, that may be what his choice is in knives. Beware; Case people tend to be a little fanatical in their choice. Kind of like the Ford vs Chevy thing.

Just put of curiosity, what Case is he carrying? That could be a clue to his prefference.

I carried a Camillus-Buck 303 for years. It did everything I ever asked of it. The current 303 is the same size and is just as well made. I have a current Buck-made 301 and I find I like that size even better.

My vote is for a 301. IMO, the best user knife available.

(War or not, soldiers do manage to hang on to what their tools. So I'd say ix-nay on the ina-Cha)

I agree, the guys I know who were In Country all came back with all their knives and some they won in card games!! definitely pass on the made in Cheena stuff, I have a Buck mini-Trapper that was bent and then bent back, the steel is on the soft side. easy to sharpen and just as easy to dull as compared to the Red, White , and (true) Blue stuff:D

I agree. Get an inexpensive knife for now. And when he comes home, give him a better knife.

I also agree with dalee. I find myself carrying my Case Canoe CV more and more. Or some sort of canoe. Mostly Case. But I do have a couple Queen as well. And I do have a China Buck Canoe and it is great. I would say get a Buck Canoe and then when he gets back, get him a Case or Queen Canoe.

I got to thinking about the context of this thread, and it really hit me.
When ya really think about, those that are overseas serving this great country deserve better than cheap....
Even if it was a 50-60 dollar Case, what better place to truly enjoy a quality U.S made knife. Worst case scenario, even if it gets lost, thats a small price to pay for what someone has sacrificed jmo

If you bye him a knife, bye him a good one. His in an environment where a knife can be needed for more than opening blisterpacks. On the other hand. When the knife is realy needed its often not so important with the specific look. Thinking like jackknife wrote. Dont go to long from what he himself chosen to use. Why not a yellow delrin truesharp, stainless backsprings Case?

Ok,

One or two stones cut a nic as they zoomed past.

Thinking about it more, I may retread my statment.

I was thinking that pocketknives may get laid, dropped, bouced out, gambled away etc in-country more than at home and was thinking several might need to be sent at once.

BUT, rethinking after all comments, stones and all, if some slope hat pointed ME to the loading ramp and said "Get On" I will have my good ole (John Wayne can rest easy now) American made 303 or 301 in my deep sand colored BDU pocket. If I am going down I am going with "MY" stuff on me.........

So get him a nice size Case (goat BBQ size) in a dark scale, yellow is harder to see in sand....

Stone him!

;) Seriously, though, cough up the extra $10 and get him an American-made Buck 303 or 301. Hell, I'll even chip in $10 to help cover the costs.

Buck 110 is the knife I'd want if I were in Iraq. Of course, that's not counting a fine Bose BP.

Thanks.

I did up 3 goats, 2 dozen carp (big), and 1 donkey so far. I've used my peanut for all but the 1 goat. That 1 I did up with my Buck 303. In all honesty, I'd say the Buck is a better size, but I'm odd, I came here with a peanut & I'm sticking with it til i get back. Then it'll be my church knife (or maybe I'll retire it). I DON'T like the Case stockmen, I like the layout of the Bucks better. I've said this numerous times and my CSM wonders why I carry a Case for it but here it goes: Buck's are the beaters that can't be beat. If I was told I was going to be a part time butcher for parties here, I'd order a 303. I'd also order (to expirement of course) a 301. I've seen a 309, (iffy).
What's a 307?

We're fanatical?

What's a 307?
Older, USA made Buck large (4 1/8 inch) Stockman pattern:

Although I do love my peanut, I have to admit the Buck 301 and 303 are better beater knives. The U.S.A. Buck pocket knives are the Sherman tanks of pocket knives. It's really hard to kill one. I know, because I beat my 301 from 1967 to the early 90's. I still have it, and even though its worn and a bit beat up, its still going. I sent it to Buck's new place in Idaho and had a new main blade put in it for a resonable fee, and its still in my rotation some days. Also in my rotation is my friend Andy's old Buck cadet. Also going strong.
