Buck Strider (large) or Almar SERE2000

Hopefully, I'll be able to answer some of Nimrods questions. First I have medium hands, other large knives that I carry (Rekat Sifu, Cold Steel Voyager, Even the Cold steel Vaquaro Grande) so I don't really carry about being too large. However, what I am conserned with is "bulk". As far had hard the knife will be used, just everday carry.

Unless "EDC" means tough use on the construction site or simular hard chores, then the SERE2K may win out for you.

IMO, the B-S is much more of a knife, but it is also much more weight, size, bulk, orint, etc, etc. Get the idea?

Thanks Nimrod, I am leaning towards the Strider, I like BIG knives. I am also looking at one of the TOPS folders. Any thoughts as to which one of these two being the "strongest"????

If are going to go for a tank, I recommend the Spyderco Chinook. Although it is about 1.5 ounces heavier, the upswept blade with the fine point allows for great utility with an otherwise massive knife. You WILL feel protected carrying this one for defense.

As an alternative to the SERE, you might want to consider the MOD/Microtech knives. I have a MOD Hornet, and although the grip does not seem to work for everyone, it does for me.

Centurian: Regarding folders you are asking about and large folders in general, I own a SERE 2000, a Tops Magnum, a SIFU and a CS Voyager.

Sorry, I don't own a Strider so I cannot comment. I think after reading the posts, I might buy one!!

The SERE is a great knife if you want a strong, sharp (great steel) and very tough knife. Plus it rides nice and low in your pocket. The one down side is that it looks so pretty, I don't want to damage it! Really looks like a custom knife.

The Tops Magnum is my favorite big jumbo knife. The blade is not as long as the SIFU, but the entire knife says "indistructable, strong, and tough". The only problem is that you simply cannot carry it in your pocket (has no clip and is really big and meaty). It also has the sexiest clicking sounds as you open and close it!!

Tops does make smaller folders, that will fit in your pocket and have clips (I think), but I don't have any experience with them.

Yeah, I guess I am looking for a "tank" :) I really like the looks of the Strider and the Almar. But after some consideration I am leaning twards a "tanto" point. Still don't have one in the collection. That pretty much means the tops or the strider.
Yeah I know Tops makes a smaller knife I think its called the CQT that has a pocket clip. I'd like to get one of the bigger ones and see if there is a way to put a clip on it.

I may also consider the Keeting Spyderco. I have been told that is a pretty stout knife.

Centurian:

I just checked my Magnum and it looks like it would be possible to fit a clip. Most likely you would have to buy a clip and take the knife to a machine shop. They would have to drill and tap the three holes. It would take no time at all. The aluminum used for the handle looks plenty thick enough. I just am not sure if your pockets are big enough to hold this folder. This knife is big and stout.

Centurian, I'm like you, I like the VG10 and size of the SERE 2K for EDC. For heavier days, I'd get the Strider since I like the idea of overbuilt.

However, I'd like the Keating Chinook myself, though the Lum Tanto is pretty nice too.

Smoke your scaring me, :D I was just litterally looking at the LUM Tanto [Knife nuts think alike](trying to get a tanto in the collection) The chinook looks great and from what Ive heard it build pretty stout as well. If the TOPS isn't TOOOOO think I might figure a way to get a clip on it. I just want a strong stout knife that will handle "anything" I throw at it within reason and not have to worry to much about the tip breaking or the lock giving way.

Centurian: The handle of the TOPS Magnum is 5/8" thick.

Plus the TOPS weighs 9 oz. Thats heavy for your pocket.

The SERE weighs 6 oz.

The Strider weighs 5.7 oz. I don't have one to weigh, but I got this info off of a web site. I thought it was heavier.

I think that I may get the Strider, it seems to be build strong and it is a tanto, plus the blade is silver.

I think you may want to examine more closely what the terms overbuilt, built like a tank, etc means when comparing the Buck Strider to the Sere 2000. You'll notice how the strider has a longer blade than the Sere, and the Buck is considerably thicker. Yet it is still lighter than the Al Mar. That says a lot. How can it be a more solid knife if it is both larger and lighter? The Sere is BUILT. Many have remarked how thick the liners are on this knife, saying they are some of the thickest they have seen on a production piece. I don't know if this is true or not. But they are indeed thick. And they are solid too, no holes cut in them to cut down weight. There are 4 thick spacer pins and a spacer block in the back which is basically a heavy chunk of stainless steel.
I have never even seen a strider, so I can't say for sure, but I just want to mention that I'm not convinced the strider is more overbuilt than a Sere.

Well I made an offer to anther member for a used one, waiting to hear back.....however, I went to the mall the other day to see if they had one (problem is mark up is WAY TOO HIGH). I was a little disappointed. The knife is VERY think, the G-10 is very agressive so much to the point it's difficult to draw the knife out of your pocket without lots of drag. Perhaps the worse part, is the tanto tip was dull. Very dull, it's so thick I don't see how it would take an edge. On a possitive note, the thing looks like it could survive a blast at ground zero. I would still like to add one to the collection, maybe as a backpack carry (hunting, camping knife) but not as as an EDC.

Yup, the Strider tanto tips are left dull, I believe in anticipation that they'd be used for un-knifely tasks such as digging and poking holes in things that don't want to have holes in them.

Also, the sharp, agressive edges of the G-10 could be sanded down a little without sacrificing the grip-ability of the design.

Yeah I looked at the other blade design, I guess it is kinda a spear shapped blade. It was sharp and very well build. However, I am determined to add a Tanto folder to the collection. The strider is at the minimum blade length I am looking at 4 inches. My other two options are the Camillus Cuda large tanto, or the TOPS Magnum folder. Problem is the TOPS is super built, but does not have a pocket clip. so naow I am back to looking at the Strider.

If you are determined to add a tanto blade to your collection, get a $50 CRKT M-16 full size (4"). You'll love the knife for the price. I got it for the same reason you want one. Then get the Sere 2000 for another $120. You won't be disappointed.

The opening mechanism on the CUDA is nice, but the liner lock is wimpy compared to the Strider. The Strider is the way to go. Hell, you want that one anyway. You may want to take a Dremel tool to the G-10 scales to round the edges (that is a modification Strider Knives wanted done that Buck could not do at their price point). Enjoy your Buck Strider.
