How good are these knives? Does anyone have any experience with them. I am looking at the 889BK. What are your impressions.

If i were you i would consider the 882, i know it's more exspensive but all the parts are top quality and the 154 cm blade wont let you down. i havn't had any problem with the lock up.

Hang Em...
Being a big fan of the 889SBMF and having four other Buck Striders (881, 889LEx2, and 890), I have been thinking about getting a 882.
My only hesitation has been the serrated blade. Are there any 882 units out there withOUT serrations?
Thanks...

There was a very short run made with a plain edge, so short in fact only a few forumites have them. Probably less than a 100 made.

That's the 154CM blade - you could always try and drop a 420HC blade in!

Good info.
I was hoping for a plain 154CM.

So are the parts and pieces of an 882 that different from an 889, aside from the blade?

Sorry, I disagree. My 882 is awsome.

Yes, my comment was not appropriate given that I didn't give any specifics. I cast a broad comment on the entire buck/strider collaboration that is not likely accurate.

Let me provide specific examples that lead me towards my less than positive view of the buck/strider marriage. First, I never owned or handled an 882. And even though it looks nice I will not hastily pursue it due to a bad taste in my mouth from two previous buck striders:

1. Model 880SP - This knife was very impressive out of the box. Heft and that 'unbreakable' feeling immediately came to mind. The problem I had is that the lock engaged so far across the blade that it was nearly impossible to release the lock one-handed. The lock literally 'weged' in place upon engagement.

2. Model 889SBMF - This knife looked solid, and for $50 from NGK how could I go wrong? Well it went way wrong with the lock. This knife was more of a slipjoint than a locking folder. I was very disappointed. I've read some posts where owners sent theirs to Buck for repair. I didn't even bother -- to this day I think it's in the trunk of my car or one of my trucks as a backup.

YMMV

Andy

Disclosure #1: My favorite knife (of all the knives I own) is my beloved Buck 112. I may not carry it 24/7 like I used to, but it is 20+ years old and it will never show up on the sale forums here or on ebay. Wonderful knife. It is, in my opinion, the predecessor of hard use knives (e.g. Manix, Al Mar Sere 2000, etc.).

Disclosure #2: I've owned and sold one Strider folder model and handled another Strider folder model. Neither had any lock problems. Period. Strider makes solid, solid knives.

Andy, my 882 is the only Buck-Strider I have ever owned. So yes, I am basing my opinion on ONE knife. I do see your point ,and I've heard it in the past. Best wishes and thanks for chiming in. Steve:thumbup:

A 154 cm blade is one big knife! Almost a sword, really.

Cheers, Acolyte.

Proud owner of...one measly Buck knife.

To answer messersmith, yes the handles are G10 and the assembly is put together with screws not rivets. I know that dosen't sound like much of a difference, but you can take it appart and tinker with everything.

Well fellas I got it in today and I am wondering how the liner lock has failed on some of your knives. I see my liner lock go damn near to the other grip panel. Which is where I would rather see it, than barely engaging the blade as I saw on some fellas knives posted here. Well until it proves otherwise I will carry it with confidence.

Exactly! That's where my 882 locks up. I guess I don't understand where these locking problems I've heard of are all about. Mine locks perfectly.
