I was looking to get a strider alternative as I posted a thread yesterday. I was looking around and noticed the Buck Strider. Even though it's discontinued, there are a few lingering for 130 ish nib. Also, I could just save up for a dpx hest. Not sure what I should do. I want it to look like and feel like a strider, not only to be practically indestructible

They were cool knives, but were not exactly known for quality. Lock failures seemed to be a common complaint for the Buck Strider. I went through a phase of wanting one too. :o

The ATS-34 models were supposed to be alright, though.

Save up for a Strider, I had a Buck/Strider once and it was nothing like the real thing and I am not a fan of the Hest 2.0 either, thats just my opinion but if you save up and get a Strider, you will not be disappointed

If I save up, what would be the best for me? I want to use my knife but.I want to be able to carry it. Smf? And would you buy new or used

Keep a check on the classifieds here, way cheaper to buy used most of the time. SNG is usually a good EDC size for most but if you like larger knives SMF is great also, I have alot of Strider's so feel free to email me if you have any questions along the way.

Id not get the Buck Strider. Ive had every variation in the past and the locks either failed or wore out after medium use. Save up. Or check out other designs that are tough framelocks.

The Buck will not capture anything near what the real deal is. Save up/trade up for a nice SnG and then you will have a great knife and something easily traded/sold if it's not for you.

Strider lied about his military career, he's one of those stolen valor guys as a vet I don't wanna own nothing he's made.

Who asked? Seriously, find a stolen Valor forum and post it there. This $hit has been hashed to death and contributes nothing to the discussion of the knives.

If you're just mainly wanting an SnG for the way it looks then the Buck Strider is a good option. I've owned a few for that reason alone. They are obviously not as tough but for 'common' EDC tasks involving tape, cardboard, etc. they are a respectable substitute IMO.

Some ZT models were even designed by Strider.
The 03xx models. (300-301-350)
They don't look like normal Striders, but have some traits.
Thumb studs as stop-pins
Titanium lock bar
G10 scale
Lock-bar stabilizer
Known to be really tough

I personally think the Buck Strider is nice knife. I picked one up for around $70, brand new. It's very ..."cool", but I would never carry it. It just sits in a box because it's kinda rare. I got it because some other guy had it and it looked awesome so I kept it in the back of my mind until an online knife store had one left on clearance.
The DPX HEST 2 is a great knife, and definitely a step above the Buck Strider. Great EDC knife, for the most part. I hate the roto lock on it though. Rather than take off the lock, I just threw the knife into my collection and started using the Emerson Commander.
If you like the strider, get a strider; not a fan of them myself. If I didn't have the Emerson, I would probably get a ZT0561 if I could find a good deal on it.

I have no experience with the Buck Strider knives. I have had a bunch of Striders. Their quality is great and their service department is the best I've ever seen or used. I suggest that you focus on the quality of build and the service (if you ever need it) and not the old controversy over individuals.
If your hands are about normal size, I would second that reco on the Sng. Nice mid-sized knife; last forever. The SMF is for larger hands, harder use. The SJ75 is more of a gent's knife...office capable and non-threatening. The PT is the baby, but will serve for casual needs just fine.

I do hope you'll choose the saved up route instead of the stepping stone method. I would highly recommend you just getting an used SnG if you have medium size hands. Obviously SMF if you have bigger hands. Once you receive a Strider, you'll understand that the knife is meant to be an user that's ready for any task. Buying it new is pretty pointless unless it's a pet peeve or something. Buy it used and just enjoy it as it is. If anything goes wrong with it, just send it to Strider and they'll take care of it. Their warranty is fantastic. I have contacted Mick about a problem with my SnG and he looked into it personally. When I had emailed him about when he'll look at it after it had arrived, he said that it'll be taken care of on a Monday. Sure enough, that Monday night, I got a shipping notification. That's customer service.

I still use and carry the Buck/Strider 880T and 881T when I am in areas I think my real Striders could get confiscated. They are good knives, solid, good materials, etc. But they are NOT Strider. You will want the real thing.

I have the Buck Strider Tarani police model in ats 34 that has held up well over the years and the lock up remains rock solid. It is almost identical to the SNG that I got a year ago except it is heavier. I m not sure the cpm154 steel in the Sng is much better than the ats34 in the Buck. If you don t mind the partial serrations and find a model in ats 34 for 130 dollars, I would recommend it. Mine has been a durable workhorse.
