Alright guys. I'm pissed. I bought a Buck Strider 889 brand new. Its great n all, until I get curious. I decide to hit the flat part of the blade (spine?) On the floor and guess what.... the freaking thing failed! Screw this... Its got two unmilled liners, and a thin liner lock. This seems like a tank until it fails and I lose a finger...

Uh-ohhhh...better prepare yourself for comments regarding the fact that it makes no sense to test a knife by spine whacking. And a 1...and a 2...and a...

Uh! I'll bite! Everyone! Go cut some stuff with the spine of your blade now, please!

Op, use your knife to cut stuff and you won't have any problems, don't take any offense at the above comment please. Just joking around. :)

I experienced the same thing. Sold it afterwords

ive taken the lock tests one step further and now I just beat on em with a 22oz Estwing. if they cant pass my test they are poorly designed, unsafe and aren't added to my edc rotation

9blades is right. Airsoft, the sharp side is the cutting part of the blade. "Sharpy cutty, flatty spiney" is the way I always remember it.

Keep that in mind and you wont lose any digits.

Have you contacted Buck to see if they can fix the problem? From what I hear Buck has a pretty good customer service department. Best of luck .

I've just never seen the point of those. Tiny liner lock, okay steel, and secondary market prices that make it more of a collectors item than a user. The cost of acquisition puts you very easily into the ZT and Spyderco range. Grab an 0200, 0700, Gayle Bradley, Or Vallotton and you have a better knife overall at a similar cost.

Interesting. Mine wouldn't lock up at all. I took it to my local bladesmith who fixed the problem but by that time I'd had enough. I sold it and never looked back.

I ordered two of them when they first came out (several years ago). The blades on BOTH were so far off center that they were rubbing against the inside of the left handle scales. And, because I had TWO of them with the exact same issue, I figured it wasn't a fluke. Sent 'em both back and never looked back.

Btw, do they still make that POS? I don't thinks so.... probably a good thing.

Bought it new from Ebay... dangerous I know... but It was made in 2011 according to my box

As much as some will enjoy typing out condescending replies about your character because you did a spine whack and didn't buy an Opinel, I could have told you the Buck Strider folder was garbage. Now I'm going to need nomex underwear and take it further, because my Vantage and 110's are/were both pretty junky too.

Thin liners and tiny little internal stop pins are a recipe for a knife that fails easy, and wears out incredibly quick if you actually use it. That's putting quality control issues I've experienced aside too.

My experience with Buck has never been good. However, their customer service was excellent. Bought a Buck Vantage Pro not too long ago, when I opened the package the blade was so off center that it was rubbing against the left liner, rubbing so hard that it scratched the blade. So tried to fix it by tighting the pivot screw, just got worse. That and the edge had a couple of grinding burns, so I returned it. No problem theg said, they sent me a new one with a 25% discount for my next purchase. Open the package, blade play all over the place and the edge had a chisel grind with big burns on the cutting edge. So return the blade...again...and asked for my money back, wich they did. Never bought a Buck again. Was not impressed, miss the old Bucks...

The 889 does look great, but it doesn't seem like anyone likes it, or even thinks it's good -- every time it's brought up, lots of people talk about issues with the folder. I think they've released a couple of revisions for it as well, but I can't remember what it was -- I think they added thicker liners at least.

Buck has some pretty beefy/sturdy looking knives, like the Buck 110, CSAR/T, Alpha Hunter (They certainly look a lot sturdier.), etc. -- so, considering that they seem to know what they are doing when it comes to sturdy folders, why did they design the 889 like they did? A cheaper, very robust, officially licensed Strider folder design could probably have done very well.
