Buck went along

This Saturday Dove season was on here in Florida. There must have been 25 hunters in the 160 acre field across the street from my house. About noon it was like the movie Bushwick on Netflix lol! The first time it happened back in the 80's I had gone to the store when more than 100 let loose! KathyJo was home alone and crawled to our bedroom window scared to death. No cell phones back then she was really scared. We had a tin roof and birdshot rained down all afternoon. Just part of living in the country..

Congratulations on a successful bird hunt David! Bucksway, great story - I remember getting rained on as a young boy on my first dove hunt on the farm, my Dad explained that the shot coming down was not going to hurt us, but to not look up - didn’t want a pellet in the eye. Those big social dove hunts had many, many hunters ringing a field. OH

What variety of quail are you shooting out there Mr. David? We still have a few Bobwhites around in Georgia, but due to “clean agriculture” practices there are almost no hedgerows left to walk down the singles after you bust a covey.

David, that’s mighty fine eating for a Monday. My contribution will be a pan of cottontails, prepared with a Buck 110 last season:

can't beat either. I had a bojangles sausage and egg biscuit for lunch today. looks delicious on both. wish I had better eats today.....thanks for posting. great seeing field to plate pics.

I need to go hunting some cottontail now that it’s been freezing cold for over a month now and should be safe from the parasites. A nice batch of hossenfeffer sounds really good.

We get after them in Jan. & Feb. after deer season closes. Rabbits don’t take much blade, you could use a pairing knife or even the small blade of a 303, but I like the length of the 110/102 size. Here’s one of my hunting partner and a few of the girls we run around with:

Geese have been fairly scarce where I can hunt on the eastern plains of Colorado. The golf course and city parks get most of them. Dutch, 6 years old, has not had the opportunity to retrieve a goose...but not for the lack of trying on my part. With the stormy weather moving in, falling temperatures and having made some new pit lids cover to try, I decided to go yesterday afternoon. The geese were flying and wanted to be in the field with my decoys.:D

Dutch couldn't be in the pit with me...five foot deep, small opening and I'm not strong enough to lift him out even if I could get him into the pit. He had to stay in the truck. When I knock down a couple of geese I went back and got him so he could experience a goose...he didn't hesitate! He did have to try a couple of times to get a good grip 'cause that's a much larger bird than he's been use to.
The pit lids worked fine.
The daily limit is five and I was fortunate to be able to take my five, just wished Dutch could have joined me in the experience. These Buck knives were with me. I'll hang to geese for a day or two, then use the a 121 to breast them. I'll marinate, then use my electric smoker. Slice and dice with Orange Marmalade and sesame seed...hmmm, yummy.

I’m ashamed to admit that I am in my 50’s and never tried goose. But l like most anything smoked including oysters, so it sounds delicious ha ha.
