Buck went along

No, we only get 1 or 2 passing thru. They have a different cooing than Mourning dove. As soon as my dog hears them he'll point them. He brought this one to me.
They are much larger than a White wing. But not as large as a Bandtail. My wife prepares dove & quail very tasty. DM

This is a project I had been meaning to get to since August. Which is culling 3 layers that could not pull out of molt. Which affects laying. Buck's Tru-Blue model 539x has become my go to knife for this processing. It works very well and with it's 5 1/2" blade of 425 steel it will carry me thru 5-6 birds, depending on their age. I use a SiC stone to touch it up afterwards. This steel has .5% vanadium and holds a good edge coming off a 200 grit stone. DM

Got six good ones today, most being what we call “cane-cutters” or “swamp rabbits” down here. They are larger than a cottontail. Used my ‘67-‘72 era Buck 110, that belonged to my dad to work them up.

Growing up, we called them swamp rabbits. They are very good and like you say, much larger than cottentail. Good hunting & table fare. DM

here in florida the marsh rabbits are a bit smaller than the eastern cotton tails typically.

I dont see many of either breed. once in a rare while.

Ours were taken in creek bottoms. I had a good nosed beagle back then and he would move them around and they would offer a running shot. Packing 2 back home over a mile away was a heavy load. DM

st8yd, those look like Fox Squirrels. The shot gun maybe a Browning A5. But the checkering doesn't look right. Maybe the Sweet sixteen? A nice day outdoors. DM

They are just cat squirrels, our fox squirrels are typically more tan with a black head and are protected, have been for several years now.
It was a beautiful morning an i even got started rather late.
It is a Remington model 11.

and the follow up. The best grilled squirrel I've ever had.
Seasoned with Lowreys seasoning salt and cajun seasoning and a couple spoons of bacon grease vaccum bagged and Sous Vide for 9hrs at 155*.
Then wrapped with bacon and grilled long enough to crisp the bacon.
