To supplement Will, TS search online for knot tying websites. I use one teaching youth fishing clinics, great pics but don't have site name handy. It shows how to "backsplice a line" so you can have a ready made loop to throw over a dock cleat. Works only on twisted braid rope. I believe they show a marlinspike in use.

As an additional bit of triva, I was told that all Coast Guard grads were issued a Buck Yachtsman when they passed their sailing cruise or graduated. Does anyone know if this was true.300$s
