what do you guys use to sharpen the gut hooks on those gutters as you know they all come in different size, so one rod is too big for one and to small for another
Use a pencil or dowel wrapped in wet/dry sandpaper. I'd try in the 1500-2000 grit to polish it up then carefully do the samething to the flat back of the hook, flat to the sandpaper. Take your time and repeat until you remove whatever burr you produce in the hook.
Go to your local hardware store or find one that carries a large selection of wood dowel. You should be able to find them down to 0.125 (1/8") and as big as a 1.5. You can cover all the sizes you're ever likely to need for gut hooks and scalloped edges. Or use round files of various sizes, you can even wrap papers around the files for finishing.
A polished edge isn't really necessary on a gut hook and definitely not on a seat belt hook.
