Well Randy,
It always helps to bring a photo to the site along with your question if you are able. Lots of Bucks knives have marking changes over the different years, a photo helps figure that out.

309s were born about 1971 and are still made today. On the main blade is your knife stamped BUCK, 309, U.S.A. ? If so it was actually made under contract by Camillus Cultery Co. NY., from 1975 to 1985. Below is a grouping of various 309s , yours might be the second from the left bottom. Your black scale is made of Delrin and your blade steel is most likely 440. Are we in the ballpark ?

In the ole days when I carried one in the watch pocket and a multi-tool or 112 on my belt, I went back and forth from 309 to 303 constantly.
Now, I carry in a belt sheath or a hanging pocket sheath and carry a little bigger knife. 303s for dress wear, 301s and trappers both the 312,313 and( yes I have to tell the truth) a 372 for denim wear. If I ever was asked about a dream knife it would be a 372 size, opposite end trapper in elk stag with USA on the tang in bose 440C or S30.
HBob is right, the 309 is just about perfect for the pocket. Great responsible age kid knife.
