I've been the owner of a BuckMaster (model 184 survival-knife) since the mid-80s or so, but on a fateful day a couple of years ago I was hacking away at some rather hard local timber to make a fire and the (for me) unthinkable happened. The blade just snapped off the handle!! Apart from total disbelief, I also felt let down by this work-horse, which I'd paid rather dearly for. It always seemed so indestructable... Now that I've done quite some research into the different alloys that are commonly used in quality knives, I have yet to find out what this (in)famous Buck was originally made of.

Does anyone know?? I'd love to know!!

Thanks for whoever is able to provide me with information regarding this mystery.

Bernard.

Bernard,

I know we had that problem on some of the earlier Buckmasters. Then we added a tang anneal operation and it went away. Send yours in and we will replace it for you. Send it to my attention though because i may have to do some digging to find one. They were discontinued a while back.
Oh yeah, i believe we used 425mod on those.

Dear Joe,

not only did you answer my question, you've overwhelmed me with your generous offer as well. I feel genuinely stoked!! I'd noticed people's appreciation for your help regarding matters of interest to Buck-owners, but what you're doing here goes off the scales for me.

What can I say? Thank you.

Perhaps you could tell me "where" exactly to send the box, and by the way, feel free to include an estimate of the return-postage cost. I'm more than happy to see to that.

Bernard.

Bernard,

Thanks for the comments!

You can send the knife to me at:

I'll fix it right up.
Take care.

Joe,

The Master is on its way. Should take about two weeks, so I'm told.

Bernard.

Bernard,

I will let you know when it arrives. I will be out of town 8/16 - 8/21 so if you don't hear from me then you know why.

Take care,

fria,

I have not had a chance to do the research yet on the 184. I know we used blanks and forgings on this model but do not know, off hand, what steel was used and when. I hope to find out soon.
Sorry,
