Buck's 420HC - My view......

Yes,Buck is the master of 420hc.The older knives with 440c are awesome also.Maybe a little better even for edge retention.

Buck changed my mind about 420HC,theirs anyway.Up until a couple years ago I would'nt touch it with a ten foot pole. Now I have several Bucks made out of that steel, and love it!I hope they will continue to offer a few models with the premium steels, but never change from their 420HC.As Mr.Ankerson would say,it gets air bleeding sharp.

I have an old 112 in 440C that absolutely rocks. The blade is missing the first 1/4" off the tip and has been reground, and the wood handles are all scarred up, but I won't get rid of it. The old thing still performs so well!

No, you can't beat the price...

Now about the blades and the origin, do bucks from China get Paul Bos's heat treat? I was going to buy a Buck that was made from China (cause the same model is not made in U.S.) but I was wondering about the heat treat. Do Chinese Buck knives get heat treated the same as U.S. Buck knives? They still follow the Paul Bos set up don't they?

Excellent question. Does anybody have an answer?

After 4 tries with other knives and steels, I have gone back to my USA made Buck Striders and now my newly acquired Buck Intrepid - now that is a knife.

I don't know what pixel dust Buck use, but I find a 25 degree on both sides and finishing on a medium stone is working edge sharp for me and it keeps it for ages. I used to go down the grades to fine, super fine, etc, but there was no real advantage after the first 2 minutes of cutting.

I have driven them into trees and stood on them as suggested in many survival knife test forums and 200lbs, no problem.

Yes 420HC or a magic steel to the fool the rest - who cares - I just know that it works, its affordable and with the Buck lifetime guarantee.

I can easily tell the difference in performance between Buck 420HC and 440C in daily use.

But for most of my EDC needs, Buck 420HC will get the job done. I much prefer it to Case Tru-Sharp.
