Buck's 420HC vs 8CR13MoV

The performance Buck get’s from it’s 420HC is partially due to Mr. Bos’s heat treat protocol, but I would venture to say that a significant amount of the performance comes from their work on EDGE2000. The CATRA work they did to find an ideal blade profile really does hold-up well. Something like a $15 Buck Bantam can outcut many knives that are significantly more expensive due to EDGE2000. If you like their 420HC, give their 154CM or S30V a try, that stuff is amazing!

I’m EDCing a 780 Exert a lot these days with 420HC on a China made Buck, haven’t gotten to do a lot of hard cutting yet but so far it’s been totally stainless and was very easy to bring to a sticky sharp edge.

Bucks 420HC is very good and a good value. Kershaws 8cr is actually pretty good in my experience I'd say it's near even just off use of the two. Have one Buck s30v and it has the bos heat treat so yes I think so.

Im testing the edge retention on my Buck paklite skinner right now on cardboard and I am very impressed. So far I have made 208 cuts of cardboard(approximately 6-16" ) each and it still slices paper. This is probably 4 times what I thought it would cut before I had to resharpen. Is it a super steel? Probably not. But I gotta say its pretty damn good for the money. I dont have much experience with 8cr.

Don't post much but I'm compelled to chime in here, particularly concerning Kershaw's 8Cr13MoV. I've never used Buck's 420hc but have an old 80's circa Gerber LST using the same steel and it was always disappointing...even as my sharpening skills evolved. I did however buy one of Kershaw's Todd Rexford derived Injection 3.0 folders a few mos ago, since I liked the overall design FFG 8cr blade and it was approx. $10 at the time(?!!) *(Blade HQ did a video of their best sellers of 2017 IIRC, and this knife, astonishingly, outsold all others!

Was never really impressed with 8cr from Spyderco's value line although it was adequate, (yet their higher end PM steels are superb...maybe the best production HT's available) but after re-profiling the Injection at around 28/30degrees @ 600 grit DTM this steel holds an edge for a very respectable time and slices like crazy. Not sure if it's Kershaw's HT or I got "cheap steel lucky" but this is really a fantastic blade at an extraordinarily low cost?

Not generally interested in budget folders but this one knife has caused me to seriously consider buying more 8cr Kershaw's.
