This morning I received an email from Bud Lang. Effective today, he has resigned and is no longer the editor of Knives Illustrated. I am somewhat in shock after reading this. I've enjoyed working for Bud the past few years and would like to thank him for all his hard work and dedication in covering knives and knifemaking, singlehandedly putting together each issue. If you would like to drop him a line, he can be reached at budlang@pacbell.net . Who the new editor is going to be I do not know nor does Bud.

Hi Dexter,
That is a shocker, Mr. Lang has really done a fantastic job rounding out KI over the last year or two without using a lot of hype. I now look forward to it more than any other Mag. I hope the new editor has his wisdom and I wish Bud the best in his next endeavor.

I'm sadden to see this too. Bud was extremely nice to my son when he was one of the KI essay winners. He not only emailed and called but he ensured that my son got his prize and magazines and even asked Bill Moran to send my son a letter. I enjoyed talking to him and thought he produced a fine magazine.

I hate change.

Wow Dexter, that's not good to hear, unless he is taking a retirement package and just wants to sit back now and enjoy!

Hey Dexter, maybe you can be his successor!

This is a shock to me also. Bud is one heck of a nice guy, and very knowledgable bladewise too. A bunch of us from the TKCL had dinner with Bud after the Blade show a couple years ago, and you should have seen us. Picture a couple dozen knife nuts at the Ruby Tuesday's in the mall, pulling out all kinds of new knife toys! Bowies, hunter, folders, etc. The looks we got were worth it alone. I sure hope Bud is not going to disapear from the knife scence, as he will be missed.

Harry - he did not give any reasons. I had no idea this was coming, it really hit me from way out in left field.

As a KI subscriber, I am curious what impact, if any, this will have on receipt of future issues. Any ideas?

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

I sincerely hope thay whatever Bud chooses to do, it will be in the knife business. If not, we are sorely diminished by his loss. I really think that is going to hurt KI a lot.

I have to agree that it certainly is a loss for cutlery aficionados that Bud Lang is no longer at the helm of KI.

Be nice if Bud is going to be at BladeShow 2000, that he be honored for his work in promoting knives.

Harry

I happened to be speaking to someone from KI this AM and was told that Bud will continue to write for them "freelance". I guess that's better than nothing. Hopefully his editorial influence will continue to be felt.

Perhaps he'll have more free time and spend it with us here on the forum.

That really is too bad. I really enjoyed reading one of his latest articles on making a hunter.

Dexter, maybe when this thread has run it's course, you could print out a copy of it and send it to Bud.
It's always nice to know that your work has been appreciated.

its really great that we can find out things like this only because we have a computer and internet access. I had to find out this way when Bob Engnath died. It was shaking me up. Luckily one of his and Stephanie's friends lives near me and he had more news to share with me. We need our community to get the most , heck the best part, out of our hobby.
As for bud leaving its great news. Now there is room for new blood, fresh blood; someone who really wants to do it different from Bud. I like when things can get better, and Bud is sharing the things he used to enjoy. now one more guy gets to make a life out of knives and talking knives and writting about them. A challenge but you can make a mark in life. Do something with your life that matters not just making money for someone else punching a clock like alot of us do. Remember when Ken Onion helped bud make a cool blue g-10 folder for missus Lang? Things like that can happen for another one of us knife lovers now. SO yahoo!
