Bud Lang and Knives Illustrated Magazine

I agree A T, in this case it sucks. Not just anybody can step into someone else's shoes and do the job quite as well. The very fact that Bud made a knife for the missus sets him apart from everyone else in his world.

If I remember correctly, he started out making kit knives and then made several of his own. That kind of makes him, one of us.

I sure hope he stays in the Knife industry. He was a reasonable voice.

I just returned from a few days out of town, and was checking my e-mails, when I found one from Tom Mayo. So, I clicked onto the forum. As you all know, there's usually two sides to every story. Personally, I had some problems with my supervisors at work, and last Monday was asked for my office keys. I was to return the next morning and learn if I had a job. I resigned at that point. I returned on Wednesday to pick up my personal material in my office. Because I had only turned in about 2/3rds of the October issue, (ahead of deadline time) and there was no-one to finish all of the articles, I was asked to stay on as a free-lancer and complete the package. I was also asked to help find a replacement and train him. Now how many people who are getting the axe would do something like that? I would make maybe a grand in the process, the company would make maybe fifty grand, and then can me. IMHO, being a nice guy, I agreed to help them. I finished a story that day, shot some pictures for another article, then I received some flak about unused vacation pay I had coming. I was told to ask the president about it. I saw my attorney instead, then left town for a few days. Today, Sunday, I returned home to find a check for my vacation pay.
To be brief, I love knives and the people who make them. Why else would I travel all over the world attending shows and visiting knife makers. As A.T. said, I have made a few knives in my time. Not many, no works of art, but some knives. In fact, I made a big butcher knife back in 1970, a few years before Blade magazine even existed. Have made a few here and there, and made a liner lock at the ABS school a few years ago. Made a frame lock with Darrel Ralph at the ABS school just a couple of months ago. That article, featuring all of the other students, too, will soon be seen in KI.
I have received a few dozen personal e-mails this past week, many from people I have never met. Believe me, I feel honored that so many people appreciated the effort I put into KI. I talk a lot (which writers don't), but I am humble, and what people say about my efforts makes me feel really great. I thank you all. I will be around the knife scene, and hope to see you all soon.
As soon as I get off this forum, I will be booking a flight to Atlanta so I can attend the Blade Show. Don't look for my red shirt, because I'll be wearing "civvies." Again, thank you all for your support over the years, and you compliments. Relative to someone taking my place, I've always said that none of us live forever. When we all go, someone will take our place, and they may do the same job, a better job, or worse job. Who knows. I hope the person who takes my place is better, because KI will continue to grow. Again, thanks for everything. Will see you in Atlanta. Bud Lang

Bud, you're a better man than I. I would have told them to lick my $%#@& and then pointed to my desk and would have added for them took look on the big pile of papers for the 2/3 of the written magazine.

Yes, they will get a replacement, but in doing so they will be taking a step down, no matter who it is......we will all miss you. tom.

Hey KI
From my point of view BIG MISTAKE

. Going to be pretty hard to come close to filling those shoes.

Bud,

Thanks for your many years of writing and just being in the knife business

I will certainly miss Bud in KI . I met him some years ago in Norway when he was visiting The Elverum Game Fair in Norway , a place where all the scandinavian knifemakers meet once a year . The "Red Lightning" crossing the market field was Mr. Lang . I have never seen a person putting so much effort in covering all the knifemakers and their knives on one day . ( He also made an article on my wifes scrimshaw , Viveca Sahlin ).
I do really hope that he stays in the knife business and there is a big chance that I don´t make a renewal of my subscription . We´ll see .
I wish Bud the best of luck in the future !

Okay this thread is about Bud. But lets make it a double whammy and be constuctiver about the next one to take the reigns! I mean Blade is not that great and KI needs to keep on giving us what we look to it for before. Any suggestions? ANy ideas? I mean lets brainstorm what to do with the mag and tell the publisher what we want to stay reading . Otherwise I guess I can live without magazines about my hobby. hell I can enjoy my hobby all by myself even if they outlaw knives I 'll still make them and enjoy carrying and using them. I guess I 'l just lay off magazines for a while and read em in the store only

Bud, thank you for your many years of service to the knife industry, not only through the magazine but your personal appearances at all the shows I have seen you at as well. You always had a minute to visit with me and you didnt know me from no one. I wont forget that! KI wont be able to fill your shoes, they will be very sorry you are gone. I know you singlehandedly put every issue together.

I hope your replacement can do half as good. Good luck Bud, you are always welcome to stop by if you get to Clancy Mt, and I will see you at the Blade Show!

Dear Bud,

My greatest respect to you for the many years of excellent work done for us knife fans
and your personal help for me with the little problem I had had back then with
Colorado Cutlery.
I always enjoyed your articles immensely and your insites into knifemaking were a great help
to me and my own knifmaking efforts.

I will be retiring in a little over one year and my own work here at dasa (DaimlerChrysler
Aerospace) has not been what it should be for the past years, so I am glad to go.
I can sympathize with you when the emplyer does not appreciate what he has in a dedicated employee...
this seems to be par for the course these days. All the more power to those who can go on
and follow their interests with the accustomed dedication.

I hear Ken Warner is getting tired of doing Knives xxxx. How about you taking over ?
I would find that great and would look forward to an improvment in this already very good
concept ! Could not think of anyone better qualified to run this in the new millenium.

my best regards to a GREAT Editor and a fine gentleman
from your friend Rolf Hatterscheid

This is bad news. KI had become easily the best of the 3 major magazines, by a long margin. I attribute the focus and topicality to Bud. Was a huge disappointment to me. Only one of the 3 I read cover-to-cover, usually in one sitting.

(Blade is very weak, and TK has ups and downs.)

Bud, I'm very sorry it ended like it did. You are a very restrained guy. Asking for keys is terribly abrupt.

We are unlikely to get a successor with your level of dedication, sense of what's right, and focus on a broad array of topics and makers, for both the user, collector, and wannabe maker. I can't imagine what the bosses thought they needed to disagree with you about magazine content-wise. It is a gem.

Bud, best wishes if you read this thread again. Take care and let us know if you start your own mag.... I'm in.

Oy vey!

With square brackets instead of one of the curly kind that confuses a paired UBB italics code ...

How long has that last issue of K.I. been on the newstands anyway?
