I forgot something and I am dumb for forgetting it!!! I have yet to see (it may have been done before but I have yet to see it) a knife magazine do an article about
knife related forums!!! Knife nuts the world over would benefit from an article on bladeforums/knifeforums/Allen Blade's Blade Board/ whatever else there is out there. Imagine how many members any forum would grow by if people could read a whole article on forums! If you do this, when you write about bladeforums think about including the pic of Spark in a pink tutu. That issue would fly off the shelves!

By the way, the link for Allen Blade's board is http://pub14.ezboard.com/bthebladeboard

Here I have over 200 posts on Bladeforums and it took me a few hours to come up with the idea that an article on Bladeforums would be a good idea!!

As many others have mentioned, the shop tours were always a great favorite of mine, you always seemed to get such a variety of people at different points in their careers. I can only think that more depth in this area is all I'd ask, maybe a column or so more per article at least. But I know you'll continue to represent the Quality aspect of cutlery press in any event.
Good Luck.

Hello Bud,

I would love to share some of my thoughts on what I would like to see in a new magazine. First, if it is going to be called International Knives then you must feature makers from all around the globe. And not just famous makers I want to know about the guy who is just making 20 good quality pieces a year from a shack n furnace in Norway, Thailand, South Africa etc...
As others have said, I like a real honest review. This is hard to do as all magazines as they need to sell ad space. But if this is going to be a great magazine then you have to tell the truth even if the knife fail you have to state it and why.
How about taking a hint from the Japanese. The magazine"Knife" is really top notch. The quality of the photos, the type of paper used and all the articles about survival, simple knife making, different type of sheaths.
Thanks

Bud,
First, I wish you all the luck in getting a new publication started. I'll fight the mob at the newstand for the first issue.
I must admit that I have a couple of opinions on what I would like to see between the pages. I know you will have to cover the factory knives (they buy the big ad space). But cram in as much on the custom makers as possible. Then come up with a sensible standard for testing knives. When was the last time you had to cut a 1" rope fifty times? Once a knife is tested, call a dog a dog! Add in a little bit of history on various styles for bedside reading and of course, lots and lots of photographs!
Again, good luck, I know any magazine you work with will only be top notch.

Hi Bud
Sorry to hear about KI, Always looked foward to getting the magazine in the mail.I'll sign up for what ever magazine your doing. I like the shop tours, How to articles, Readers letters, How about how-to articles that shows ever possible way for makers to use the various grinders and their attachments and monthly issuse.

Some of what I'd like to see in a new mag...
shop tours of custom makers...since it is to be international in flavor, show the shops from Austrailia, South Africa, Germany, Sweden.
Reviews...but not just of production knives...how about the various books and authors ( Loveless and Barney, Mc Creight, Boye ,Goddard, ect.) with photo's from the books. Review the videos out there ( Allen Blade, Hrisoulas) with screen shots.
Review and compare the different grinders. What is the best budget minded grinder?
How to's: not just on how to complete a knife but also on the various ways to deal with different tang styles, different methods for handles ( cord wrap, bolts vs pins, hazards of working with woods vs synthetics)
Mix in a lot of quailty photos and you'd have a lot of happy subscribers (or at least me).

Hi Bud -

I'd like as a monthly (yes, the magazine should be monthly!) feature an in depth look at important knife makers from the past fifty years. They can be active or retired, dead or alive, but all should have a claim to important contributions to the knife world of today. Too many people think that knife designs and good ideas - especially the custom world - started with the liner lock folder in titanium and g-10. Give us our common history before its forgotten.

I think another feature that no one is doing today is a "tricks of the trade" column: you see it alot here in the forums, where someone asks, "How can I sharpen my chisel grind?", and several makers chime in with the Pro's answer. Its very heartening to tap into their collective knowledge.

Good luck on the project.

well it looks like Bruce had a vacation long enough and he gets to step into a great knive lover's job. So much for my therory that now someone else gets to do what Bud did, Didn't bruce Voyles do Blade? What a load!. If this works out I will have another knife to read so there is something from all this stuff. I love reading. I can't sit and read each word straight through, so I look it over and then read a bit here and there as time goes on. I was thinking that KI might go south and Blade would just get worse for having no competition. Now it is going to be more and I a reader am the winner and have to do nothing to enjoy the fruits but pay simple magazine prices. I win! I would love to read about knife design, unheard of makers doing something unique and alot! About custom knives in the days just before and after the Knifemakers guild started. Write about Pat Crawford and ask him why he makes his knives as he does, get inquisitive in my place. Thanks alot if you do .

I believe you could make a solid go of it just based on a few in-depth evaluations and comparison tests each issue. You just hear of too many problems with some reputable manufacturers and even custom makers. I, for one, am extemely interested in reading unbiased reviews and test results (Cliff Stamp immediately comes to mind). I have on more than one occasion finally had the opportunity to handle some highly touted custom knives, only to be dismayed by the sloppy work and craftsmanship that nobody had the balls to say in their reviews. I don't believe that the knives being evaluated should be fine tuned specials, but rather a random sample depicting what a consumer might actually receive upon purchase. I don't want to know how a manufacturer or makers knife performs when at their very best, but rather the typical performance that can be expected. You too often here the reviews describe the knife in question as being very good (great grinds, fit & finish, solid locking mechanism, heat treat, etc.) only later to find problems with the same knives being discussed here on the forums. A standardized grading system would be of great value to knife enthusiasts, and allow everyone to cut through the hype and make purchases that they truly would be satisfied with. You might make a few enemies along the way, and I would hope that the advertisers would have enough character to take the good with the bad, and not use the test results as their criteria on whether to support your magazine or not. Let the knives speak for themselves, there are already too many magazines that tell people everything they want to hear and nothing that they don't. Just my two pennies.

The KI format was excellent. Great breadth of content, great photos.

Resist the temptation to cut articles in 1/2, part up front, and then page back for the rest of the article at the rear of the mag. Just like you resisted with KI.

More on field performance of knives for sure, from chopping to slicing.

More on steels, from the good to the super, sans-hype. More on why a proper heat treat is crucial. Why cryo is essential. Keep up with ceramic developments.

More on sharpening techniques, more on blade profiles, what they are good for, what they aren't, and how it affects cutting or chopping performance. (Ken Warner has tried his best to get people to accept the virtues of convex grinds, they just haven't caught on, probably because of sharpening problems).
