I'm thinking about picking up one of Bud Nealy's MCS system knives and I'm having a hard time deciding on which one. I know that I want one of the smaller 3 1/2" blades but other than that I'm not sure. I'm also tempted to get the Daryl Meier Damascus clad blade but I haven't heard anything about it. Anyone have suggestions on blade style or on the damascus clad blade? I'd appreciate any insight.

Check out the MCS system knives here.

I have handled them at shows and they come in a great variety of sizes and shapes. Each felt a little different, so it's hard to tell what your hand would enjoy using. They did mention that the smal Pesh Kabz is one of their better sellers. This one has more of a finger guard than the other models do, it has somewhat of a robin's head butt end for a pinkie catch and the tip is very well reinforced. All models are very well made. Also, there are different handle slabs you can get, with some in rubber, smooth G-10, textured G-10 and the like. There are also blade coatings you can opt for. Happy hunting.

Thanks Boink, I appreciate the info. I do like the more pronounced finger guard on the Pesh Kabz and I'm leaning towards that model. I also like the reinforced tip and the overall aesthetics of the Pesh Kabz.

If anyone has info or pics of the Daryl Meier damascus clad blade please share.

I don't think that you'd go wrong purchasing any of Bud Nealy's MCS systems ! His quality/workmanship is top notch and his knives are so comfortable to carry. And he's a great guy to deal with !

I had a small Aikuchi for a number of years and currently have a small Kinzhal and am very very satisified with it.

The Pesh-Kabz and Cave Bear are very cool designs (have been eye-ballin' the Cave Bear hard). :D

Sorry. . .no experience with his Daryl Meier Damascus clad blades. If Bud is using it. . .it's good ! And will come to you razor sharp !

Gig, I just sent an email to Bud and hope to get a response about the Damascus clad blade, if not I'll just call tomorrow. I'll share any info that I find out.

I'm definitely going to pick up one of his knives I just have to find something to sell to fund a new knife! ;)

In case anyone else is interested in the Daryl Meier damascus clad blades that Bud Nealy offers here's a little info that Bud sent me:

"In answer to your questions. The blade shows the layers of Damascus about 1/2 - 2/3 down the blade, at that point the homogenous 52/100 cutting edge takes over. The benefits are a cutting edge of singular hardenable material. There are no soft layers involved. 52/100 starts out life as a ball bearing , is forged flat and then forge welded between two 40 layer billets of Damascus. The Damascus layers aid greatly in strength and 52/100 is one of the best cutting materials available".

I plan on ordering a 3 1/2 Pesh Kabz as soon as I can raise the cash.

Thanks for the info on the damascus.

Something to look closely at, for sure ! :D

I'm with you on the blade funds ! I want one of the Cave Bear's so bad. But I'm sooooo dang Christmas and end-of-year tax poor right now. :(

I have a Pesh Kabz [large] in the Meir damascus. I had an exotic wood handle done and engraving on the bolster. I don't suggest wood scales or the engraving [but I do like both, though :)]
The knife is really outstanding in several respects. It is a very light and trim design that is very easy to carry in many different ways, but it is still quite alot of knife. That's quite an accomplishment right there. The MCS carry system itself is one of the best and most versatile carry systems out there. Maybe the best. There are many ways to carry and because of the knife design, all the options are really practical. Personally, I really like being able to carry inverted in a jacket inside pocket or an outside vest pocket. That's not practical with most knives, but this one is so light it works very well. Inside belt carry works too in several different positions, which isn't the case with many knives. And the sheath lockup is very solid, with or without the "rare earth magnets", but that affords an extra degree of secirity and confidence.
The Meir clad damascus itself is also outstanding. First of all, it is gorgeous. I have always liked 52100 and the core is 52100. It cuts extremely well. And the Pesh Kabz blade design is really excellent, with a reinforced tip for strength and a very elegant "persian" sweep for penetration and cutting. The handle shape is both elegant and practical so your hand will not slide forward onto the blade or backward off the handle. My hands are a little large but the size of the larger knife is just right for me. And, amazingly for such a thin knife, it feels good in the hand.
I don't know about the smaller Pesh Kabz because I don't have one. It depends on your hand and your intended use. Try to handle one before you buy. You might find the 5 incher to be light and compact enough for your needs, and a bigger blade can be more effective for some purposes...
I think it's a great knife. I don't know the prices now, but years ago when I bought mine it was really well priced, a bargain really. Did I mention that the damascus was gorgeous?

I don't think you can go wrong with Daryl Meiers' laminated damascus. Daryls' work has always been top notch. Laminated damascus gives you the beauty of damascus and the cutting ability of a 52100. The only thing to remember is that this combination will require a little more care to keep it from rusting. Researching what to buy can be alot of fun. Make informed decisions and you will be happy with the final product.

I carried a full size Pesh Kabz for many years before switching over to a Wortac.

I did have the Wortac made with a couple of my own mods to it. I like wood scales so I had him put on some Ebony ones. Since I might have to index to a reverse grip I also had him put divots in the scales to make that change over easier. Aside from that I had him place some thumb and fore finger serrations on the front of the handle/hilt. I beleive he's doing that to most of his knives at this point. Blade steel is standard ATS-34. Works fine and holds a nice edge and is somewhat rust resistant.

While I love Damascus steel, it does require more care if worn close to your body. BTW he is also using CPM S30V steel now as well. Either way you really CAN'T go wrong with one of Bud's knives!
