Yes, Brendan, I agree, I want Uncle to tell us if all is maya around us, what is real?

munk

What's real might be any HI Khukuri in your hand, the stack of wood that came down due to that Khukuri, and the wide-eyed expression of your neighbors after they see just what a Khukuri is capable of on wood. :D

Only you, and your own caltalog of experience. You'd have a damn hard time proving anything outside of one's own personal existence. The rest could be like a movie scenery. Can you really believe what is said or what is 'generally' accepted? Can you imagine a country accurately that you've never been to? A person from history that yuou never met?

THink of it like this: There's all of these forumintes, and we each have painted a pic in our minds of what each person is like. We make a mental map of that person, and build a pic or feeling (for you non-visual people) of them. How can you know if the profile is true? You cannot, unless you meet the perspn for some face time.

This happened with me ans D7Reamers a while back. We worked a khuk-for-sword trade, and met in northern Indiana. I had a pic of him in my head. He emailed me his description, and that modified my mental profile of him. Then, I actually met with him and my image stood corrected by the person actually presented to me, a fine young lad named Mike.

Fun exercise, huh? my .02

Accept it but at the same time question it - where did the gases come form ??

Evolution is an awesome thing to imagine - logical !!

Don't even go there uncle - we'll be here forever !!:)

How many here accept the Big Bang theory of creation

hey bill if everyone would except that god,or the creator,or big banger[VISIONS OF LARGE SAUSAGE ON BARBIE EXPLODIING], or whatever religious fantasy you believe in, or dont believe in ect.
i honestly believe something or some power made everthing in the universe, but unlike most i believe whatever made us looks on us as being no more special than a grain of sand,an ant a microbe,or any other creation. we just think we are more special.
i was watching a big bang a while ago looking into the sky at night, and i could see the light created by a supernova. a planet that exploded some hundreds of thousands of years ago and the light from this event had only just reched us on earth now thats amazing to look on something that happened so long ago, makes you think hey.another universe being born, how did it happen HMMMMMM MABEE GOD FARTED AN ANOTHER LOT OF US WILL BEGIN OUT THERE SOMEWHERE. black holes hmm isant it funny how we take what we are told for granted,

SERIOSLY THOUGH WE SHOULDANT THINK WE ARE SO SUPERIOR, it makes me laugh the scientists, men of learning ect define what makes us homosapiens differant from animals,is our ability to make tools ect, then suddenly they discover monkeys making tools to get food from hard places, and guess what now they will change the criteria to suit.

I don't sweat the small details, like big bang, or if the Mormons added an unauthrized book..or why should a billion Buddhists fail to achieve 'heaven" simply becasue they did not know Jesus was behind their search? Or whatever!!! But, having qualified this, I think the big bang theory is good, especially now we know there is probably a black hole in every solar system. Black holes have at their hearts a place where all known laws of space and time are up for grabs. Gee, that sounds a lot like God. Funny thing, in our thoughts right now, in this moment, all known laws of the universe are suspended.

..used to give it some thought, but I'm pretty sure now that any bang is part of a cycle of bangs, like it all falls back together.

Now I'm more of a steady state theory believer.

spoken like a man with three kids, a wife, dog, and a lawn to mow.

I also go with the never ending story approach..even with BAng or bangs...there is continuence.

How about a bottomless bottle of Heinekin? Bet you'd at least try to swallow that.

( I can resist anything but temptation! ):D :D :D

One kid on the way, one wife, and two dogs, in my case.

"The concept of no beginning or end -- just endless, forever -- is pretty tough for me to grasp."--Uncle Bill
Yep, we are but fininte beings in this realm, an ya gotta admit it is unlikely that it just got going when you showed up, even more unlikely that it'll just shut down when ya leave...Just a bunch of transforms from energy to mass and back again. Einstein said anything with mass (or mass itself) was just energy at rest. We are a combination of the two, which is much more interesting than one other other.

The Norse creation myths do well to explain things big-bang style. There's a place called Ginnungagap, the proto-void, and the meeting of fire (energy) and ice (mass) went BOOM!--created everything from nothing.

Big bang theory tells there were densest energy or highest heat at the beginning. The Creator must be a HOT SHOT! Sounds logical to me.

Puns aside, I personally believe life is like the surface of sea. Float a circle of rope on it, and we call it A life. Rope will get worn out and can not hold its ring shape some day, death. Some contents inside the ring will float away, some just sink. We get things inside ring, we lose things out of ring. The sea will not care if a thing is inside a specific ring or not though a ring can float its life thanks to the existense of the sea.

Very interesting! I like that analogy, it sounds almost Buddhist in its "non attachment" like nature? I assume the rope ring is elastic in size and shape and can be smaller or larger(fuller?) at different times depending on what it holds.

I miss college, don't get to think about things like this much now with family and work. Ahh, good ole philosophy class..Speaking of that how about Plato's analogy of the cave as an explanation of "reality"?

Very interesting thoughts about the rope, like Uncle Bill I find it very hard to grasp the concept of no beginning or end !! Logic dictates alot of my thinking, when an animal dies what happens to it's soul - does it have a soul. No - why, yes - then it's the same as us !!

I believe everything has a soul, and that we are all just animals - clever ones, evolved into what we are today. I don't know how we got here or where we are going. I believe there is a higher power - GOD - and that must mean I believe something happens to us when we die. I believe the bible is as great story book (no offence) but the simple fact that it's been touched and written by the hands of man makes me reject many things. Science also makes me reject many things the bible has to say and the fact that somewhere on this earth there are still people or civilisations that have never even heard of God that will not go to hell cos they don't follow christianity.

When a person is good and genuine in their personality that to me is what religion should be - I'm not dissing religion but I think the word religion should be taken out of all the languages in the world and more focus should be put on spirituality !! Look at the problems religious disputes causes !!

"Take what you need to survive leave the rest or there will never be anything left "

...Excellent points, Brendan, all.

"The written word is a Lie!"--Johnny Lyden, PIL

"History is a set of agreed upon lies"--

I agree that spirituality is often (and inappropriately) tied to dogmatic religious practices. Organized religion is often used as a control, like society, for the populace.

The unification and reformation of europe was a Power struggle between ploitical and religio-control forces, and the church won (by having the power to excommunicate kings). Thus, the first corporation, the catholic church, with its home office in the Vatican, was born. (It really started with the fall of rome,The Roman empire, gave way to the HRE-Holy Roman Empire, and they've been making money ever since).

Anyhow, giants fall all the time to make way for the little guy. Just watch the rollercoaster in modern corporate America...

Hi Ghorka

I am one of those scientifics talking about how man is superior of animals. Well, that is I am not a scientist yet, I am still a student of biology. But I am doing my best to become a scientist one day. Well, let me just explain why many scientifics say humans are superior.

I agree with you, humans are animals, and we are absolutely not superior. I see myself as a part of it all, a small insignificant organism in the great ecosystem, that is what I am. But as the situation in our world wide Western culture is today I have no choice but to act as if I think that humans are superior. Well, when I talk to normal people I experince that Christianity has left a strong impact on our international western culture, even in people who are non-religious. Since Christianity used to dictate that humans are above animals (and it still does in conservative circles I guess).

So if I am to be heard in my argumentation about things in nature and why we should preserve it I have no choice but to agree to that we are superior, even though I hate saying such things.

I hope this made you a bit happier about biologists at least. It is just that some times we have to pretend to agree with some people who have a severly self centered image.

Best wishes

..I was sure you'd respond to this post and comment on the Ginnungagap comment I made earlier in the thread! I didn;t even get in to Ymir, or Authumla the galactic cow....heehe!
