While browsing Cabela's today, I fell prey to the impulse purchase emotion and picked up this little chopper by Timberline for $45. It's 9" long with a 4" cutting edge, 1/4" 440 stainless, Zytel scales, and weighs in at 19 ounces. Here's a photo with my GB Mini for scale.

It seems to be well made with nicely finished edges all around. The scales are actually fairly grippy even when wet, and the deep finger grooves provide comfortable and secure handling with a variety of grips. It comes with a good quality leather belt sheath as well.

The edge was pretty good right out of the package, but a few minutes with a steel and it was shaving sharp. It will be interesting to see how the edge holds up after a good chopping session. I've got a cookout planned this weekend, so it will be tested with both kindling and food prep. :D

nice score. question though...arent Wetterlings smaller axes around that price?? I know u have a gb but I was just curious.

Good score, I like the look of that little axe. Seems like it would be useful in a camp kitchen as well(ulu style).

It was just one of those immediate gratification purchases. I've been looking at similar choppers by GL Drew and JK, but I'm on a beer budget right now. :D

From what I have heard they are good little axes but the handle screws can come loose so ya might want to stick some loc-tite on the threads before you take it out !!!

Let us know how it does for you! It looks a lot more rigged than in the company product photos.
