budget fixed edc

Many good options already listed.

For a smaller option, I like the crkt hunt n Fisch quite a bit. I would also look at some of the cheaper puukko's, like a kellam puukko.

Condor has a ton of options as well, though I think most are closer to the 4" range.

With the Mora Companion HD, your dad already has all the knife he needs. However, if he wants a little more knife, I’d say the Kansbol. Tough and versatile, with an unobtrusive ambidextrous sheath, and light enough to go in a front pocket.

+1 on the Hultafors GK and the Schrade SCH55. I am also looking forward to the Mini Skrama and the Baryonyx Grimalkin, a couple of interesting, modestly-priced Izula-esque bare tang knives. These should both be pocketable with some minimalist slips.

Manly Patriot. Or Fallkniven F1, used ones come up on the Exchange. Sometimes you can find some hunters by Austin Goldman.

I still need to get around to ordering one of these. Such a good value, and designed by one of our forum members to boot.
Agreed. I'd love to get one myself but I have too many branding irons in the fire and to little cash in the bank. I'm still not financially back up to speed after lower back issues and now trying to deal with my daughter's engagement, to boot.

There is no way I can justify it right now. Especially when you consider I have three PIF items waiting to be shipped. I think one of them might be yours.

If I had this situation arise, I would simply buy him a White River Backpacker Pro and be done with it. It runs around $115 and over his budget, but perhaps not yours. It's a great little knife, strong and versatile.

The other knife I would suggest is the BK-14 with handles added and a different sheath. I have not been very impressed with the sheath they come with unless you just want to slide it into a back pocket.

Just saw the thread by 42 blades.... take a look at the Grimalkin. Might work for you. Price is right. I would prefer handles myself.

I don't know if the sheaths would be good for 'at work' purposes, but I've had these 'value' knives on my wishlist for awhile:

1. Buck 101 Fixed Hunter
2. Buck 113 Ranger Fixed
3. Steel Will Druid fixed blades (various sizes)

With the kansbol, is it a full tang or Full length stick tang? I looked it up and I thought it was a full length tang. Not sure if the tang is very wide. That would be a very good choice.

it's not a full tang, but it's 3/4 or a bit more, and very robust - I took this from another bf post:

That looks like a mini chef's knife. How do you find that it handles when working with wood? I find I'm better at making shavings and such when the blade and bottom of the handle line up more. I have trouble controlling the angle of the cut with knives like the Backpacker Pro that I've tried. Is this something you notice? Something you get used to?

I admit though, the Backpacker Pro looks like it would be a nice utility knife for food prep - particularly chopping on a cutting board.

recommend him that one already and he didnt like it. he has a hard time spending money on knives, the only knives he has are 2 schf9s, a mora companion HD, a spyderco para 3 (only cause i bought him it), and another small $20 schrade that i cant remember the numbers of, and a bunch of ebay knives. trying to bring him to the dark side

Why?

What is it about the Mora Companion HD that isn't working for him?

FWIW, I suspect that in terms of functionality on the job site, this is more about finding a sheath that doesn't interfere with his movement around the job site and that allows for easy but secure access and replacement all day long. For as ugly as it is, the Mora plastic sheaths are actually great for work sites.

The other thing I suspect is that what you're looking for is something with more "pride of ownership" appeal than a lowly Mora. In terms of cutting and durability, pretty much anything will work. I would perhaps steer clear of something with a fine clip point, particularly if he's prone to pry with a knife. But beyond that, pick a knife he (not you) thinks looks good. That will probably be enough.

so for me i ended up going with a custom fixed from someone off of facebook, its only in the design phase but from his first design he hit the nail on the head for me, gonna be a 4” blade in 1070+CR or 1095, i havent decided which steel would be better for off the coastal conditions in florida with the humidity and salt

Esee Izula is your answer.
Small, sexy, tough as nails, great warranty (not that you'll ever need it) and not breaking the bank. Get the Izula2 if your dad has big hands..
