Here's a quick overview of my budget forge up and running with the ends covered as normal. Look out for my larger blown forge build soon.

I'm addicted to forging! I have a concrete table poured for my forges and plan on building a simple Smithy soon. I'm saving up for a decent anvil next and have been on the look out for a better stump for my current setup. Once I locate a taller stump I'll attach my rr track permanently. I'm using the top of the track for most of my work (has decent rebound) and flip it over and use the flat bottom (no rebound but it is flat!) to straighten.

Thanks for watching!

Thnx for sharing! Looks great! May I ask why you've chosen gas instead of coal?

Thanks! The gas setup seems a bit cleaner and simpler to setup I suppose... I wanted a simple plug and play unit. Less labor and more work time in a day.

That being said I do plan on building on a coal or pine charcoal powered forge. I have a forge blower and want to add a quick change setup so I can use it or my larger blown forge. I hope to make a simple unit from a large brake drum... an in-ground sword forge would be cool too.

I have unlimited access to Pine if I want to make charcoal and can get the correct coal by the truckload locally... I also know where a few coalbanks are locally.

Try using the end of the railroad track as the anvil. Considerably more weight under the hammer that way. Glad to see you're having fun.

Thanks, it is a lot of fun!

I want to try the end of my longer piece, I need to clean it up a bit. The train was coming fast when I was doing the chopping so it is a bit rough. :D

Nice setup! Very similar to mine when i started forging.
I would suggest to get a bigger bottle and add it a pressure gauge and a needle valve. Bigger so you have less gas freezing issues.
A big leg vise is something you would also start looking for...very handy when forging.

Great idea on the bigger bottle, I think I will do that once I have a permanent place for my forge. In the Winter here my gas grill will almost freeze the regulator so I bet at least a warm water bath will likely be needed on a small tank.

Good call on the gauge and valve too, I have them and will be using them soon when I get my larger forge set up. I will say the Atlas Burner is just awesome for the plug and play aspect, (and function) I am still working on getting my big forge build together while this one takes about a minute to set up. I'm going to have everything bolted in place soon though, it really needs to be.

I have a vise :D but it is a 2000 mile round trip away, I hope to go get it soon. It is going to get a ton of use!

I feel like I am getting close! I am dong this after my day job (full time knifemaker :D ) and hope to really be set up by the end of the Summer. I like to start small on my new projects but can already tell the forging is going to become a huge part of my knifemaking.

Thanks Stezann!
