Budget Pyrometer/IR Thermometer Reccomendations?

Hey all,

What should I be using to measure the temperature of my forge and metal media? I have some ideas but I want to hear it from the experts. I intend to both smithing and heat treating. I'll spend a little more for a better end result in my knives and tools, but I'm really looking for the cheapest thing that will do the job right (tall order, I know).

Thanks in advance, all!

PS, the IR pyrometers I'm seeing may be way over budget. Can we keep it under $100 for something that'll tell me the temperature of my forge and my steel?

You can build one very simply. I am building a heat treating kiln and this will be my secondary temperature reading set-up. minus the project box. All my parts will be in one control panel.

You need this thermocouple $26.00

and this PID $36.00

Here is a box to put the PID in. $25.00

If I'm reading all of this right, I can use the PID and accessories as a stand alone temperature gauge, or with servos to control the temperature of the forge?

That sounds nice. So, I can get the PID to go with my simple/crude forge set up, just to monitor the temp and make adjustments by hand, and take the same PID box over to a vertical salt bath automated temperature control forge later? Great!
