Budget smatchet opinions needed!

So after lots of research i ended up deciding while a tool can have multi functions it cannot really be ALL purpose. so for the big knife action i think ill have to save up for the tops tfk or the becker bk9. Then for the chopping an actual axe, probably the husqvarna carpenters axe or hatchet (ive also seen these lower priced hatchet made by marbles, anyone know much about em?) and for more detailed work ive got my trusty ontario rat model 1. Ive learned theres budget nd then theres just plain cheap. Thanks for all your help.

As above, the smatchet was made famous as the OSS killing blade. But if you want to try it out as a camp knife, the Cold Steel smatchet machete is a cheap way to test the design. Beware the sharpened back edge. It might make some tasks harder, but you can file it down easily. And there's nohing wrong with a good machete as a camp chopper, but blade shape matters, so you'll be doing an experiment here.

Let us know how you make out.

The man said he wanted a Smatchet for camping and/or bushcraft. Are you trying to deny a man his Smatchet? The Smatchet is perfect for those uses. The Smatchet is perfect for everything.

It’s the cure for what ails ya.

It’s is also the answer for every unanswerable question.

Therefore, it is the one exception to the rule against using a word in its own definition. Ie, “smatchet” is an acceptable answer to the question of “what is a smatchet?”

Do a search for it here on the forum. You’ll get it.

Fairburn Quote

The psychological reaction of any man, when he first takes the smatchet in his hand is full justification for its recommendation as a fighting weapon. He will immediately register all the essential qualities of a good soldier - confidence, determination, and aggressiveness.”

Uncredited quote
“The smatchet was designed at Lochailort. The first ones were made in Glasgow by a man who was, by all accounts, a thoroughly insane Scot (he insisted that the blade be tempered in the piss of red-headed boys from Glasgow) and brought by train up to Ft. William. They were delivered to the local hotel ...and then sent out to Lochailort”

I gave my Cold Steel Smatchet to a neighbor. I really missed it, and despite have a variety of machetes, I purchased another smatchet last month.
I have a Barong Machete, as well. I don't like plastic handles, but otherwise I really like it.

I have two of those. I'm going to take the edges off and use them for Escrima training. They're great for the price.

I'd conduct a bit of research and pick up a Boker Smatchet. I think they come in two different sizes, and may have to be ordered off of their corporate website.

The closest thing to a budget smatchet that I know of is the Cold Steel Shanghai Warrior. It looks much more like the historical Smatchet than Cold Steel's so called Smatchet machete.

Schrade bolo machete is normally around $45, [deal spot removed]. It has a smatchet type look, good reviews even with 3cr steel.

Heads up, kookoo, but I believe stating "knife model/price/nonsupporting knife retailer" constitutes a "deal spot" and is against the site rules.

Deal spot rule
"BladeForums.com stays open due to paid subscriptions from various member groups, including Dealers who help sponsor this site. A dealer who does not have a paid subscription is not allowed to advertise in any way, shape, or form. In the past, dealers have used 'shill' accounts to promote themselves & their products; as a result we've limited all dealer advertising to The Exchange or registered Dealers with active paid subscriptions."

I'm not a dealer, and I didn't link anything.

It was reported and I'm here to tell you that deal spotting is not allowed. Further instances will carry warnings with points. If you collect 50 active points the system will automatically ban you.
