Budget steel recommendation

aeb-l is so cheap

Don't promote dealers who don't support the site. Consider this a counseling, thanks.
I'm sorry, that was My fault.... I wasn't sure if Mr. Fisher had a typo?

If it helps, I say good things, and VERY critical things about pops.

I’m sorry I thought that was relevant information to the question asked as shipping costs can be a big part of steels expenses and I thought we could give recommendations as long as we aren’t posting links.
I'm confused now too, since I thought that was what was recently settled on after a couple mods weighed in on this issue. We were even advised to list key words that would bring up an item on Amazon, but just not a direct link. Hopefully we can get some clarification.

I’d also like some clarification as I believe the comments in this thread to be on topic of the question asked, does this mean we can’t mention any supplier that doesn’t pay for a membership here? If so that rules out New Jersey steel baron, Admiral Steel, Jantz, for the guys in Europe GFS knife supplies, ect. A lot of good material suppliers that support us by providing quality materials, without them there may be less members here paying for membership.

I'm confused along with the rest of you.
Only thing I can figure is that Chuck filed a complaint with Spark. I don't see any link in Joshua's post, or even a name of a company (maybe that was edited out?).

If Spark's comment is to be taken as gospel, we can't mention 99.99% of all knife brands made, knife material suppliers, parts and supplies sources, USPS/UPS/FedEx, The United States IRS, Fastenal, Invicta watches, Mercedes Benz, Every Knife Show in the world, etc.

Promotion can be from hard core lobbying to simple happy experience recognition. If "any" promotion is banned, Spark is right. It's not easy to implement rules which are not very clearly defined. This one is a small example. Bigger example would be what about members from Europe? AKS has antieurope rules so it's kinda weird to abide the rule for European suppliers.
Now you know how hard is to make laws. Discourse is a solution.

I don't understand the confusion. If someone pays for a vendor/supplier/dealer membership, anyone can mention, link, quote pricing, quote shipping and anything else about the vendor. If a vendor doesn't have a membership, you cannot mention anything other than their name.

The guidelines above are common sense. Spark is the owner of BladeForums. I pay Spark so I, and others, can discuss my business on BladeForums. Any vendor who does not pay Spark does not get the same benefits. Vendors need to pay Spark to support this venue.

The rules were enforced for years, but have gradually relaxed. Lately there have been links to non-supporting vendors. There is open discussion of non-supporting vendors material pricing and shipping costs.

Gentlemen, Stacy opened up a thread in the "mods only" section and hopefully we will be able to provide clarification, including any related "nuance", once we have had an opportunity to discuss the matter further with Spark Spark and our colleagues.

Appreciate your patience while we attend to this matter on your behalf.

Okay, gents...here it is from the horse's mouth:

Mentioning is fine. Promoting sales & providing prices? Crosses the line.

This is the policy I have been enforcing for some time and I believe it to be reasonable. Thanks for your helping us keep things within the guidelines.

Let's keep it simple folks.

If somebody asks you where you purchased something, you can say where. Period.

Do not "promote" or "endorse" the non-supporting site here in the thread. Do not provide prices. If you want to discuss it privately, do so via PM, email or phone.

I just had to move a post because it mentioned the vendor and that they had the best price for a given steel, shipped.

That is beyond "mentioning" and into "endorsing" and "promoting" a non-site supporting business. That is exactly what Spark Spark has said not to do.

(If I say that ABC Corp. has the best price for an item, that is promoting. If you ask me where I bought something and I say at ABC Corp. and leave it at that, that is mentioning.)

Anything beyond that is not going to fly.

Maybe open a new thread to discuss this!! I don’t see an issue. But I get why there is. Regardless. I ordered some aeb-l and some 8670. I’ve been working on a dialed in heat treat for ztuff for my personal knives lately. Just trying a few things. Prequench, different austenizing temps, different hold times. But I have it dialed in for aeb-l and 8670. Simple enough!

Welcome back to the forum, sorry I opened a can of worms apparently. I’m glad you’ve got a few steels to try out that look like they will fit what you want. Those are both great choices, if you end up liking Aeb-L Nitro-V is another great option, from my understanding it’s going to perform about the same as aeb-l but with a bit added corrosion resistance. Make sure to post some photos in the what’s going on in your shop thread. It’s always fun to see what everyone is making. Good luck

No problem man. My time rotates on these forums, I’m a single father and I work a lot! So when I get extra time I get some reading time on here. I’m really familiar with Larrins work, and have read about nitro v. I’ve never had a reason to use it. But I think I’ll try it eventually. I usually stick to 3v ztuff, 4v and zwear. Those are my favorites by far! I prefer tough high alloy steels for my outdoor blades!! But thank you for all the suggestions!!

AEB-L above 60 should be a good option.

52100 if AEB-L is too hard to HT reliably or you want to avoid some of the challenges with it's tendancy to warp.

A2 may be a consideration as well depending on how tough you really need it.

I'm not someone with a bug out pack but if I'd make one I'd go with a stainless steel, a simple diamond sharpener and mini strop

I posted a new thread on the issue that derailed this thread. It is pretty simple and makes sense. Let's all try and follow the rule from now on.

And now, back to our regular programming.
