By the souund of it, it may be similar to an Okinawan art I studied in PA called Goshin-Jutsu. Involved the same array of Okinawan "Peasant" or imporvised weapons designed to level the playing field between the peasantry and marauding samurai or brigands.
They did add the Khukuri to the regimen, and many of the reverse khuk grips are remnicient of the reverse holds for sai or kama...here's the khk pic from the site...
