Have a healthy respect for the buffer. Use a good leather apron, not only does it offer some protection, but it will keep all the crap spinning off the buffer from getting you dirty.
I use a cardboard box as a shroud for the dust collection system around the buffing wheel. That way if a knife gets away, it is more likely to stick into the cardboard, rather than bounce back and end up sticking into me.
