well i've got a buffer, (self made job) and it works fairley well, it's a belt driven 1'' shaft, with 2 pillow block bearings , mounted on a piece of 12''
channel.

the prob is, since i built it, the shaft had a very slight bend in it, i had a machinist check it at work but he couldn't take it out. any ideas where i could get another 1'' shaft. that is approx, 26'' long. i was thinking on just buying drill rod and having the ends turned down and threaded for 3/4''. is it possible to just use a mild steel rod? i figured that wouldn't be prescise enough.

If you buy drill rod, it would be too soft as it is annealed, so basically the same as mild steel. I would go with B7, which is supposedly tough tempered 4140 I think.

yes, mild steel round will work just fine. as long as it's "straight" (+- .010 end to end"). Drill rod would be ideal.
