Buffing domed pins

How do you keep from darkening/staining the wood handle when buffing a domed pin. I'm using some stabilized black oak burl from Mark. The pin is 304 stainless(does anyone else see the punn?) so how to prevent this? And how to fix this. I guess I can sand and then try again, hopefully the right way with all of your help. Thanks in advance
Cody
Ps. I am using white compound on a loose sewn muslin wheel

Masking tape, just lay a piece over the pin. You'll buff through the tape over the pin and it'll leave only the pin exposed.

Ya, Will, I think you're wright. I just read through Wheelers Stuck in the metal with you, and see that is how he does it. I picked up a couple of other tips too. It seems that he might know a thing or two! ;)

Somebody please pinch me the time stamp says Yesterday, 08:58 PM so I am assuming that means this is not an old post!

AS I LIVE AND BREATHE, WILL LEAVITT! Man I thought you had dropped off the face of the earth. Good to hear from you cuz!

Will, is one of the guys that I first started talking with back when I first got started in this insanity! If he's got some advice for you pull up a chair and shut up and listen!:D

Lol thanks.... Lot of health issues. Working on getting the shop set back up. Working on building a slipjoint with hand tools..... It's interesting to say the least.

A tip I picked up at the ABS Expo this last weekend, use a leather punch to punch a hole in your tape that's the right size for your pin, then put the tape on. Nick's method scares me because I don't have that kind of control with a cratex wheel. Nick uses masking tape, Mike Quesenberry punches his hole in Gorilla tape, I like blue painter's tape, and Adam DesRossiers uses a piece of an aluminum can. I think he got that tip from Rodrigo Sfreddo--he told me but I don't remember. So, the key is the leather punch in whatever it is you chose to mask off the area. For a 1/6 pin I leave about 1/32 or so sticking out each end, more if I want it to peen bigger (but at the increased risk of bending the pin over).

I spent a good part of my time at the Expo asking folks about how they domed pins, and with a little practice can now do it confidently.

Thanks Travis, I had the same thought when I saw Nick using his foredom, that a leather punch would be better. And had thought about different masking material. I think I'll try gorilla tape, and pop can seem like a good idea too. I think I'm going to try using a ball pein punch like Nick did too. Seem like a lot safer, specially when your nick name is lightning....why, cause I never strike the same place twice! Thanks for the help.
