I always buff all my knives the same and get amazing results. I use 2 different grits of diamond compound on hard felt wheels followed by some pink scratchles on loose muslin. so anyway the prob is stabalized redwood. all other stabalized woods are fine, polish to a mirror, but redwood collects the buffing compound and turns it gray? I ran in to this before and just wet sanded to 2000 and called it good. what do you guys use on redwood?

Ellison: You can buff a coat of beeswax onto it. Just use a clean, loose muslin wheel and it will look like a million $$$.

Could you tell me more about your diamond polishing setup please?

Hello there,
I have a problem with new felt bufiing wheel. I was never used one before. When I put it on the engine it became vibrating very strong and I am afraid that it will brake the bearings. How to keep it centered and steady while turning. Do I have to scrap it with something do adjust the center?

I start with green wich is about 1200 I believe and finish with 3600 (yellow). use it with a small amount of WD40 to keep from burning your wheel. the green is actually abrasive enough to remove any scratch in your blade but will leave your metal mirror like.....untill you use the yellow then you know what a mirror looks like! I never use a felt wheel on my buffer I buy the small 1/4 inch shaft ones for my air tools, this and use them with the diamond compound then use the pink scratchless on my buffer. This will be shiny enough where all the hills and vallies you have sanded in your knife will show, thats why I dont wet sand my blade, I use WD40 and India stones to 400 grit flat stoning the entire way then the blade is perfectly flat (.002) no hills and vallies and ready to buff. yes I buff with diamond compound after 400 grit

Ellison,
Did you use a sealer? I use a lacquer based sealer to fil the grain after 400g, then finish to 2000 and buff w/ fabulustre. Did the redwood come from a reliable source, or ebay? I got some from ebay that was sold as "stabilzed", but appeared to be, and smelled to be pentacryl. My fault for not asking.

I bought this from Jantz But Im glad you said that as I was watching an auction on some stabalized wood as we speek!!! ("stabalized")!!!

you might check and see if the wheel is the right size for that shaft. if you have alot of loose strands haning off the contact surface it might vibrate the way you are talking about you could use a wheel rake and that should take care of it.

i buff all my stuff with the grinder running away from me instead of down at my feet. if things get caught and thrown it just hits the wall and is less likely to come at my body
imagine a line where the center shaft is and dont buff anthing down from that line use saftey glasses and look directly at your work and a face mask is advisable too.

but thats what works best for me.
