  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Bug bites on the trail

AfterBite is good (it's mainly ammonia, which works as well, too). A dip in cold water (or a cold shower) also seems to ease bug bites. I don't use antiseptic unless there seems to be a danger of infection (i.e., from scratching).

as a diabetic myself ,,id go see my doc first thing,,then ask the doc whats recommened for diabetes for bug bites, ect,,as for the antibacterial soap that is a good first step ,,

I have a severe reaction to bee stings, although my doc says I'm technically not allergic I get sever reactions. I believe you are asking about "regular" bites though right? Just the annoying kind...

For mosquitos and the like - I normally hike with pants to limit the amount of bites on my legs and where long sleeves as appropriate. I tend to spray my clothes and not my skin with bug spray, but I don't use that much of it. My best reaction to bugs is to simply ignore them. It's really hard to get used to doing and my wife always wonders how I'm able to walk and not swat bugs when she's being attacked. I guess it comes from years of standing at attention and being yelled out for twitching a muscle :) I got used to learning to ignore an itch so I'm able to, for the most part, ignore those annoying bugs and the after affect of their bites.

That being said - for bees and more dangerous insects I try to remember they are truly not out to harm me and if I remain calm while a be is flying around me chances are it'll just fly away no harm done. Should I get stung and I'm able to get to the stinger realtively easily I will try and remain calm, remove the stinger, pop some meds and start back to my vehicle. I'll call someone as well to let them know I was stung and that I'm on my way back home or where ever.

Luckily I live in an area where I don't have to worry about killer bees or scorpions or the like.

Anyhow - that's a long response to your question.

Plantain - grab leaves (smaller leaves taste better), chew up, slap on wound. Bee stings, bites, etc.
Jewel weed - break stem, more juice at nodules, rub juice on poison ivy infected area.
Cattail - put slimy stuff on burn.
