bug out bag. are you serious about it?

Shadow, if you drive where there is snow, you should be ready to spend a couple of days in your car. I've never had to do it, thank goodness, but there were many days where I lived that could have gone that way. do yourself a favor and just slowly add things to your car to improve your odds. there are a few winter car threads around here if you search them up.

A thought on why packed-to-go bags are important. A friend of mine told me about the time his house burned down. The house next door was under renovation, and its assumed that the fire was started there by an incorrectly used construction heater. He had always thought he would have time, time to put on pants, time to find shoes, time to grab a couple favorite things. What did he have time for? keys. He was able to grab his car keys and move his vehicle away from the house before it was damaged. Nothing else. If you got that bang on the door tonight, what would you grab? what can you have in a bag to make the next 72 hours less hellish? contacts, meds, anything? The BOB doesn't have to be about a city wide, or even neighborhood disaster. What event can disrupt your life for three days, and what can do to plan to deal with it? That could be nothing besides your wallet, or it could be a 100L duffel, Just depends on what you are willing to put up with.

I live in coastal Florida I have been under mandatory evacuation seven times. Five for hurricanes and two for wildfires. Once, I heard on the news the winds had shifted and the fire was moving in a different direction - mine. I left work early to come home and gather some personal items and was stopped by a roadblock. Noone enters for any reason, I was told by the Sheriff's Office. The firefighters saved the house, but I was really happy I had a 72 hour bag in the truck.
