Bug Out Bag Knives by Ontario

If it was me, I'd take a long look at a Husqvarna hatchet to chop with instead of the knives. It's less expensive, it will move a lot more wood than the choppers and you still have the midsize blade for your knife tasks.

Why not add a Mora? only 15$

I’ve got big hands, but I refused to chop with the RTAK II. That big boxy handle is too much for me.

The RTAK and I spent some quality time with a belt sander. Knocked the corners off the micarta. Rounded what was left.

It’s still not great. But I feel safe chopping with it now.

If you want a chopper I would stay away from the RTAK II. The handle is boxy but the real problem is the balance. It should be way more blade heavy if it is to be used as a chopper. I had one and it was a decent knife but terrible as a chopper. If you must stick with Ontario, get their Marine Raider Bowie or better yet, one of their machetes!

I only take a hatchet if I am not taking a saw. I like a saw and chopper knife better than I do a hatchet.

I can down some serious trees for shelter and de-branch really fast with a good chopper knife, a saw and chopper knife is way faster than a hatchet by itself, probably a little lighter also.

That's solid. I grew up with the holy trinity of the hatchet, knife and saw so it's generally what I stick with.

I have the Marine Raider in my personal Bug Out Bag and I love it, it is my all time favorite knife next to my USMC but I am wanting to try the Ranger series, my goodness, $61 for a knife that may be a great chopper, I have to find out.

Sounds good, also check out the "night stalker"(?) series, the 9 inch blade seems like it would be a good chopper and they can be found for good prices too.

12" Ontario machete. Would be my choice. I also thinks skills beat gear. ( I do like gear)

That's a big bug out bag. I'd be more worried about weight and being mobile as possible. All those knives seems redundant.

People have many different views on what a bug out bag should be. Some believe it should only be able to sustain you for 72 hours. Some like myself consider their bug out bag to be a start over bag and a bag to carry enough to let you survive forever without coming back to civilization. I am the start over type such as a survivalist. I am not trying to reach civilization but get away from it.

Just because a bag is big does not mean it has to be filled all the way. As for the knives being redundant I would have to say I do not see why you believe that. It is better to have and not need then to need and not have. I see a big knife to build shelter, a medium knife for belt carry and will probably be used the most and a small folder for when you forgot your knife back at camp.

Only the large chopper would actually be strapped to the bag as the smaller knife will be on his belt and the folder in his pocket.

Right, and people who've actually gotten off the internet or Youtube and have actually gone out and test-hiked with their INCH* bag or BOB know that actually, like Redmasta says, weight is a HUGE concern for folks who'll actually be going anywhere with this bag.

Nothing amuses me more than watching Youtube "survivalists" show off their BOB. They start unpacking everything, and after about 17 means of making a fire, and like, ten folders, I have to shut the video off. That tells me right there that this is all a fantasy for them. Try hiking say, ten miles with a bag that weighs more than 30lbs** and you won't get far before things seriously start to Suck. Just saying.

*What you're describing is an INCH Bag (I'm Not Coming Home).

** Or even less!!!
