Bug Out Bag Survival Knife

I like Beckers for this use. They're affordable, strong, well made and not too thick to cut well. Since I keep a multitool in my kits, and always have several folders on my person, I went for the larger models (BK-9, Machax and so on), because any detailed work could be handled by the blades on the MT or my EDC folder.

It's a little on the expensive side, but I think the cold steel trail master series is as good as it gets for a survival knife. Any of the larger esee fixed blades would be excellent as well.

...Get a 3-4 inch fixed blade slicer and a folding saw...

^This. That combo weighs very little and is extremely versatile. Consider a multi-tool that includes a saw; the Leatherman Blast does and I like mine a lot; I'm sure there are others as well. (Every BOB should have a multi-tool anyway.)

If space, budget and weight limitations allow, you can certainly add a machete, hatchet or 8-10" blade heavy knife; but a good 4" fixed blade and a saw will go a long, long way to covering the sorts of things you're going to need to do in a survival situation. Don't forget a diamond sharpening "stone" and a couple chunks of 0000 steel wool for cleaning your blades. :)

I always have a folding knife in my pocket. To supplement that in my BOB, I went for cheap, light weight, easily sharpened, and pretty tough - Cold Steel Bushman.
If I never need it, I feel fine having $20 tied up in my BOB. If I need it, I will feel fine using it for any camp chores, including some careful batonning.

Good advice there.
It's a "bug out bag" - right?
Just one knife?
No way.
If I want to survive, it will be packed with enough to get me where I'm going.
I have my small Collins axe, a Bahco Laplander, I'd have a 4+ inch belt knife ON my belt:

And then one a bit more substantial for camp work, baton splitting fire wood/starter and potential defense:

Best knife in the world in that situation is the one you have available. If you really are in this position the maker and brand won't matter much as ling as you get home. My point is have at least 3 to get you through.

Becker BK10. It can chop, do fine things, is indenstructible, would make a decent fighter and isn't too big and bulky so it would keep your pack light and comes with a sheath that has a molle straps. And it can be had for about $80 shipped. 2nd choice would be a BK9 which is a longer version of the 10.

Mine has optional micarta scales:

I second the Becker 9 or Becker 10..... both great selections and why over pay for something that is not nearly as indestructible and half as useful...... You won't feel bad batoning a Becker, but pay a thousand dollars for a Busse and let me see you want to Baton it! HAHAHAHA!!!!!

If you are thinking of just storing a knife in your kit, I'd go with a Kabar Becker BK-16/BK-17. It is probably the most useful Becker knife of them all. You might want a larger knife available to you and in that case, it's hard to beat a BK-7 or if you are comfortable with it, a BK-9. Basically, the BK-10, BK-7, and Bk-9 are the same knives with different length blades. So choose what you like.

Get yourself a Victorinox SAK of your choice as well and keep it in your kit/bag.

Well I've batoned with my busse knives with no problems sure didn't pay a thousand bucks for any of them though. I've used them to start fires with a fire steel, chop kindling and most any other task you would use a knife for in the woods.

I have a Randall Bowie.

I would select a BM Adamas as well

I would not forget my favorite BM Presidio 520 and 525.

All together (along with my AR and 1911) wouldn't take up much room.

Thanks! This was exactly what I was looking for, somebody that has the Pilots knife to give me some details, and to give a opinion as whether I should keep it in my bag or get something else. I have multiple knives (from the Sog Demo 2.0, to a cheap 10$ knife). This one has definetly earned a place kn my bob, from first sight, I feel in love with it.
