Bug Out Condition

I've been getting out and walking a bit, doing yard work, etc. Cut the junk food down, just need to quit drinking the Pepsi.

Heh, I see I'm in better shape than I thought. I can walk out the door any day of the week and hike a minimum of 10 miles a day w/ a 35lb pack, day after day at high altitude, in bad terrain. I just get more speed and distance, the more days I walk.

The thing is, I'm one of the least capable backpackers I ever see out on the trail! That's food for thought, gentlemen.

The thing that gave me the most obvious benefits is a cardio workout, -- jogging. I only do this because it helps my backpacking/hunting/fishing.

To be fit and have a good Cardio will not remain long without eating normally.
A guy with a low cardio and 20 exstra pounds overweight, will last longer in the same situation.

False.
If you said a guy with good cardio AND 20 extra pounds would do better, I'd agree.
And I see them at the gym all the time.:)
You don't have to be Stick-Boy to be in shape fellas.;)

You need good Cardio if you work for the military becouse some politicians may drop you in a warzone and you need to run,but does not mean that you can run faster than a bullet!?
Except some psychopath with bodybuilding manic obsession which led to macchio look like man to impress the girls; everything else is relative with stupid paranoia.
"be prepared to survive" you know... stereotype survivalist man will say.

truth
In the book caleld "The Long Walk"
More than Half of the participants on this truth story were smokers. They survived in that condition, they walk a horse into the ground!

Another real example
Book
Private Yokoi's War and Life on Guam, He was a smoker too, he survived!

Some big figure like Les stroud, in comparison What has survived? He survived to pay his bill? that it!

To be or not to be? Good Cardio is imagination will, adapt to the situation is far more realistic solution.

I agree...20lbs is pushing it though. I'm not sure what the average weight is but for me lugging around an addition 20 would be some work.

But, again...I agree. Take alot of the pro ball players, sometimes a few extra pounds helps on the field too.

I'm glad this thread came up. I lift 5 to 6 days a week but this has encouraged me to step up my cardio.

Truth: The Long Walk is a work of fiction.
Fun read, silly ending (like most Stephen King books), but not a great resource to base one's survival on.:D
I used to smoke as well, and it sure didn't help with endurance, cardio or otherwise.

Edit: Apparently there's another The Long Walk:

Sławomir Rawicz (1915–2004) was a Polish Army lieutenant who was imprisoned by the Soviets after the German-Soviet invasion of Poland. In a ghost-written book called The Long Walk, he claimed that in 1941 he and six others had escaped from a Siberian Gulag camp and walked over 6500 km (4000 miles) south, through the Gobi Desert, Tibet, and the Himalayas to finally reach British India in the winter of 1942. In 2006, BBC released a report based on former Soviet records, including statements allegedly written by Rawicz himself, showing that Rawicz had been released as part of the 1942 general amnesty of Poles in the USSR and subsequently transported across the Caspian Sea to a refugee camp in Iran and that his escape to India never occurred.[1]

In May 2009, Witold Gliński, a Polish WWII veteran living in the UK, came forward to claim that the story of Rawicz was true, but was actually an account of what happened to him, not Rawicz. Gliński's claims have been questioned by various sources.

Which may also be a work of fiction.;)

Im an ex-smoker too (some years ago). For those of you who smoke, try to quit your ciggies for a couple of days...The difference in cardio is amazing.

I smoked for 18 years, then quit, and started lifting weights. I went from 165 to 212 lbs in just a few months. Had to buy all new clothes, etc. I really didn't eat anymore, it just affects your metabolism.

Got an ankle that's been assed up for a month, and still giving me problems, but other than that I'd be ok at the moment. I can go all day, I'm just not very fast.
Like Rock6 said, though, it's a lifestyle, a continual commitment. The only reason I'm in what I think of as good shape right now is that I got off my butt and lost 13lbs. by doubling the frequency, and quadrupling the duration, of my cardio before a recent trip. Weightlifting is great for strength, and strength is great to have for lots of things, but for "long-term, carrying a backpack", being strong probably doesn't help me much. I see people that I know are much(MUCH) '"weaker" than me, yet can hike faster, and probably do it carrying more weight, because they're better conditioned to it.

Be strong and have good cardiovascular conditioning. Lifting weights helps both.

Good physical shape is one part, foot care - no bunions and such - teeth - no cavities, eyes - Lasic. There are a lot of preps that a BOB can not fix.

I'd love to have lasic. I can make it without glasses though and legally drive. You're right about feet. If I had an extra 300 I'd get some Lowa's too.

Couldn't agree more. My dad was a person that always made it a point to take good care of his feet. I learned that at an early age. I always make sure to have good supporting shoes/boots.

Also, I got the bicycles out for the first time last night. The weather was perfect for a ride. Only did 3 miles, but hey, it was a start. Felt great to get them out again.

No question that being in reasonably good shape is important if you ever really had to bug out. You live longer if you maintain a regular program of physical activity. I need to do more. I notice when I do really physical work now for a few days that I am tired for a couple days. Not dead tired, but noticeable. Not good.

Same here. I raked the back yard, even with my son helping me, and it just kicked my ass, lol. Stupid gumballs to begin with. Sawed a big branch that fell in last night's storm, then split it. I have no endurance what so ever.

So would running or walking be more important in the long run? Tortise or the hare? I personally smoke 1 - 1/2 packs a day and my cardio is terrible. I can walk for hours though.

IMHO being able to mentally handle being alone and moving nonstop are more important than the cardio ever would be.

moving nonstop = cardio, when your covering 15-20+ miles a day w/ a pack over uneven terrain- smoking probably isn't going to be at the top of your list for things to do :)

Riding a bicycle can help get you into better shape, it'll also carry way more gear than you can, further, and with less energy consumption.

A folding bike also enables you to travel on public transport.
