First time posting here but was so infuriated that I decided to join up. Been a long time fan of Bugei, and decided to purchase the Bamboo tanto. Bugei has long had a reputation for great Quality Assurance so I figured the price was fair. Fast word five months after I ordered and my Tanto arrives.... scratched to hell. (I will post pictures if I can) So, frustrated that a "higher end" tanto would have scratches on the blade and habaki I called bugei. They told me to send it back and they would refund after they took a one hundred dollar shipping fee. So basically I have to pay a hundred bucks for something that wasn't made properly. I have to pay for their mistake. What the fresh hell is this? This common?

No this is far from common. Did you buy it direct or from a dealer. If from a dealer I would contact them. If you bought it direct I would call back and ask to speak to one of the higher ups and explain the situation, cause I've never heard of such a thing.

When I was into swords (11-8 yrs ago), Bugei had a great rep. Hope there is a piece missing here; a misunderstanding perhaps. :( Follow the advice above^^^ and let us know what happens.

There is a sword sub-forum here that might be of more specific help. Use the little report triangle at bottom left of your post and ask a mod to move it. Pics are always helpful too. --Welcome to BF.--KV

Sorry to hear this. The Bugei Bamboo series of swords are on my short list for 2019, but I may have to rethink this....

First post photos it might help others to give you some advice and guidance. Looking at their website they certainly seem to promise a very high quality sword and their prices reflect that . Get in touch with someone further up the chain and consider approaching them with respect, this could all be just a mess-up. Suggest that the sword you were sent doesn't reflect the high standards shown on their website Even if you are mad telling someone they are wrong is going to make them resistant to helping you . Of course you paid your money and you have a right to expect what they promised . If after some effort they really are resistant to putting things right then you have this community to help out. There are various forums here where a make would prefer not to be mentioned on . If it was a dealer contact both the dealer and the company (again) if I was a maker of quality knives or swords and a dealer is damaging or mishandling them then palming them off to customers I would want to know . Also you might have consumer laws that protect you from "items not as described" situations. I am not a US citizen so I am not sure what your rights are here. In my country manufacturer's and seller's tunes tend to change at the mention of statutory authorities especially if they have a good rep to protect . Take inspiration from the Sun Tzu's The Art of War (not Japanese, I know ;)) and win the battle before you step on the battlefield . In other words try everything reasonable you can before shitting on them from a great height . I hope this all goes well for you

I second this advice. The situation as described seems like atypical behavior for bugei. I would contact them again, describe the situation and see what they say. I can sort of see them not paying for return shipping (not really but okay) but charging you 100 dollars seems a bit excessive.
