This piece of steel was dozed up when a friend was doing some landscaping. It was obvious that it was a leaf spring, probably from a buggy or from some sort of horse drawn farm equipment, It had been in the ground for a very long time. I was concerned about using an unknown steel but heat treated it like I would 1095 with good results. A file will not cut the steel and I did some chopping on hardwood without the edge chipping so I am confident that this will make a very usable knife. The end of the spring had a nice taper which gave a natural distal taper to the blade. (I bet spring makers in those days never heard the word "distal" in their work). An interrupted quench gave me a very interesting quench line.

The only forging required was to straighten and anneal the spring
Flat grind with a Scotch-Bright finish
Deeply pitted flats and spine
Curly maple handle
Overall length: 12 3/4 inches
Blade:8 1/2 inches
Leather scabbard

$165 Which will include postage to the US or Canada. My PayPal and email address is gldrewknives@yahoo.com Please contact me for other payment methods.

It just blows my mind that your friend digs that out of the ground and you take it and turn it into that killer looking blade. I always admire your work Gerry but I like the way you recycle steel and handle materials and turn them into the beautiful knives that you make. It's one thing to order the steel and materials then design and craft a knife but you my friend are the poster child for "go green" Awesome knife thanks for sharing the history of it with us knifeknuts

That's a Great lookin' knife, Gerry.

Can you check the length of the blade.....it looks a lot longer than 8.5 to me, the oal looks a lot longer than 10.75 too.

I hope the steel is similar to 1095. I'm thinking seriously about buying this 1. Most of your knives are so unique and unusual.

I am with Blade 66,, very cool stuff., they say the longer in the ground the better..I think you said it also.
.Great...

My wife would probably kill me, mainly because she'd find a drawer with a lock on it in the kitchen for 'MY Knives', but that looks like an excellent butcher knife to me.

If you ever find the rest of that buggy spring, make some cool handy hunters!! that was a great looking knife. I know you had to harden it, what do you think the RC hardness would be after that?
