Bugout 535 blue to black scales RIT dye ?

Ok so I thought I would update this thread a bit since I have had my bugout rit dyed for 2 months now. Its been in my pocket everyday since then and shows absolutely no signs of the dye rubbing off or anything. Super happy with this mod. Sometimes I find myself forgetting it was actually blue at one point. Definitely worth the time and little aggravation if you really don't care for the blue and are competent enough to take it apart and put it back together. Its like a $3 mod.

Well its back in my hands. Here is the final pics of how everything turned out. Thanks to everyone who helped !

Did BM tell you what was wrong? Did they replace anything other than the thumbstuds?

Long story short ... after using it a day or so it had to be sent back to BM for the same original issue. I wish this was resolved in 1 trip but I understand things fall through the cracks sometimes. Their words ... " apparently the tang has a rough finish on the rounded part causing it to chew into the axis bar during deployment and creates a rough mate between them".
It is due to be shipped back to me on Monday 4/16/18. We'll see how it feels when it gets back. I replaced the studs at home with a extra set I had not BM.
I have been 2 months without my Bugout to this point. I had it for maybe a week before having to send it off the first time. So though all of this I have purchased a second Bugout and have been enjoying it. It is what I would call a perfect example right out the box. Fit, finish, grind lines, centering, and action ... all spot on ! All I have done to it is change the thumb studs to silver and the clip to a standard BM deep carry in oxide finish.
When my original Bugout gets back to me I will have a good example to compare the action to.

My second attempt with Rit dye love it so much I listed my g-10 Rouge scales to sell.View attachment 850474
I'm torn between doing the RIT dye or getting some RogueBladeworks G10 scales like the ones you sold. What did you think of those RBscales while you had them? I'm also trying to decide between the wave G10s like yours or the scroll pattern.

The g-10 are nice but I also have a bugout with there carbon fiber scales on it. When the black Rit Dye came out so well i figured i would sell the g-10 and put some money back in my pocket. The rit die knife is my work knife and the carbon fiber is my weekend carry. I love both the bugout is the perfect knife for me.

same here my Rit dye job is hold up great with zero sign of wear. I carry and use my bugout daily at work and love it.

Thanks! So...if you were gonna get a set of Rogue scales, you’d get the CF ones over the G10 Wave like you had? I’m not a huge CF fan but...the ones I’ve seen look good.

Thanks so much for the tutorial. I followed the ‘recipe’ except I did not let it soak overnight - just the two 30- minute simmers.

Looks great! Maybe Benchmade looked at that and said "We need to get the black version into production right away!" Maybe?!?

So...you sent them the dyed scales with blade and had them reassemble it with silver spacers and thumb studs?

Thanks !

I sent them a fully assembled knife with only black dyed scales and a rough axis/tang engagement. When it was returned today I stripped the blue from the spacers and added the silver studs. The thumb stud set is a extra set I had and originally put aside for this project.

How did you strip the anodizing off?

20 min. soaking ... rinse with hot water. Repeat soak for another 10-15 min. Then rinse with hot water again. Make sure and rinse with sink nozel well inside tube. Take paper towels and roll between fingers and make a short toothpick shape to stick inside threads and sort of screw the spacers onto the paper towel so it dries and cleans threads well.
I’m sure there are better ideas out there. But this has worked for me on this project as well as on my 940-2 removing the lime green on those spacers too.
Good luck !

Thanks. Might have to try that. Looks like it worked pretty well for you. I prefer the silver to the blue anyway. I wonder if the lack of anodization will affect the aluminum in terms of strength/corrosion resistance.

I polished my 940's a bit a while back and then wiped them down with a light coat of oil and wiped away the residual. Also put a drop of oil in the tube itself ... Then used my air compressor on a low setting and a nozzle tip to blow any excess oil out.
That's been a few months now. No sign of corrosion of any sorts at this point. This Easy Off technique has been used many times by my buddies that race RC cars. They have used it on small parts ( suspension and front end ) in both aluminum and titanium with no issues I'm aware of.

Great stuff!!! Just ordered my project Bugout. Can’t wait to make it black! Was wondering about what to do wit dem blue spacers. Was thinking about just covering them up with a black one of these: https://www.etsy.com/listing/540646...out-custom-back-spacer?ref=shop_home_active_3

But...likin’ the Easy Off solution. Thanks for postin’.

(Also thinking about using black thumb studs from a coated mini Grip.)
