So I started making knives little over a year ago. Like others I'm sure, I don't have the money and the resources to sink hundreds and thousands of dollars into a hobby that I wasn't sure if I was going to stick with.. One of the things I knew that I needed was a way to heat treat my blades. What I did was built a propane forge. The first one I created was Soft Fire Brick stacked on top of my work bench, which I have a video below of. I've upgraded some things since, Like building a frame for the bricks from a twin bed frame, putting it on an old stripped down gas grill, adding a K type thermocouple and digital read out, and an 8ft propane extension hose. If you have any questions please ask and I will explain anything I can. Thanks for checking it out.
Items Used:
1) Soft fire brick (purchased from a local ceramics supply store)
2) Propane Weed Burner ( Purchased from Lowes)
3) 8ft extension hose (purchased from Lowes)
4) twin bed frame ( purchased for a @1.00 at a yard sale)
5) High temp furnace mortar ( purchased at Lowes)
6) Old gas grill (found on the side of the road)
7) Omega K type thermocouple and digital read out (purchased at omega.com) This was the most expensive item.
This is not a step by step yet, but just thought I would put this out there to give others just starting out some ideas.
I'm sure you may be looking at this and thinking that it looks pretty dangerous, and my wife agrees with you...

This is a pic of the front will it is running, I used two bricks as the doors, and as you can see there is nothing holding the bricks together.

Here's a pic of it all put together on the gas grill stand. The burner you see is the ones they use for tarring roofs, I found this didn't work like I wanted it to. In the previous pics I am using what I use now which is a propane weed burner. I can get the temp up to 1900 deg.

Here's the frame made from a twin bed frame..

Here's the video of me using the original version.

Here's the video of how my forge sits today.
