If you were to give this a try, how would you go about this? Love a little discussion on it. I understand a 3 wheel grinder is preferred but say I needed a smaller foot print dedicated slack belt/platen/contact wheel machine no changing of tooling arms how would you guys go about it?

Much smarter people then me on this site have come up with some amazing things interested to see what yall come up with.

Depeding on how you do it, I'm not sure how much you'll be saving on the footprint...

If you're JUST interested in slackbelt and/or flat platen grinding, I'd probably think about direct drive, I.E., mounting the main contact wheel onto the motor shaft. See the Grizzly knifemaker grinder as an example.

A 1 to 1.5 hp motor will likely be adequate.

Another thing you'll really need after mounting the contact wheel is a frame to hold the idler, and a way to tension and pivot for tracking. Probably mounting some plate to a c-frame motor face would be the way I would start. Some telescoping tubes with a compression spring would be an option, or maybe some kind of cam/lever system like you see on many 6x48 belt sanders.

Side view of Mic Koval two wheel machine. I've had it since 99 still going strong. I've done some retrofit on it and made it into a wet grinder. The footprint itself is very small. Note the mounting plate.
