First off this is the type of forge I'm building: http://www.zoellerforge.com/miniforge.html

I have all the stuff to build a small forge for heat treating, 1x4.5x9 fire brick for the floor, 1x24x24 of inswool, 5lb bag of satanite, and a bernzomatic bz8250 for heat. I'm waiting on my firefighter friend to get me an old scba air bottle from his station this weekend and this is where the queations start. The bottle measures 6.75" diameter, if I cut the bottle for a 9" long body will it be too long? I figured with it being a little wider than the websites example it could go a little longer. I'm wanting to only do one wrap with the inswool with a piece for the back wall and i'm coating the satanite .25" all around. My thinking for going only one wrap is if its wraped twice and being 8" long (with an 1.25" of inswool and satanite on back wall) it won't get enough air to work properly. Am I thinking right or do I need to have two wraps too keep more heat in? Or... do I just need to make it 8" long like the web site suggests and be done with it? but then would it be too wide? I would like to have one as big as possible but still be a mini-forge. I know my thoughts are kinda scrambled in this post but any help would appreciated!

Maybe use one wrap on the insulation. Consider making a small opening in the back so you can pass your blade a little out the back in case it's too long to get an even heat in your forge. You could also use a couple of firebricks to close off the front a little if needed.

Good luck with the new forge, Craig
