building a kit...

for TFin's PSK challenge, i decided that instead of building a traditional mini kit, i would approach this like a dayhike gone wrong.

in that case, i would normally have my EDC and a bottle of water as well as a couple of other basic goodies in my pack. because i don't want to bring a pack for my kit, i decided to go for a setup that i have ended up with on plenty of quick jaunts through the woods.

my EDC is often all that comes with me;

so my first goal is to spend 24 hours in the woods only using my EDC. if for some reason i have trouble, i will allow myself to break into some gear that i would likely have if i was wearing pants with cargo pockets (whenever i wear cargo pockets, i end up with extra survival goodies in them). so, the gear that will be in my cargo pockets will be:

so the total list of things i'm going to try to survive 24 hours with is;
Case large stockman
freshly refueled zippo lighter
bic pen
1 liter water bottle
snack
camera

if i have trouble, i will break into my extra gear;
rehandled mora
ferro rod
fatwood
cord
bleach
PJCB
space blanket

i also intend to bring a backpack with me with a blanket and some more extra water and food, as well as some other survival goodies. this is my last resort pack, for if i really have trouble. it will still be things that i'm likely to have on a quick dayhike though.

if anything goes really wrong, i won't be more than about 3/4 of a mile from my house, so i can always walk/crawl/roll back home.:D;)

just thought i would share my setup and goals...looks like i'll be doing it this weekend, and i'm looking forward to it. so far this week its been getting down to around freezing, so it should give me a good challenge.

You ARE going to survive. It all starts with mindset. Frankly, you could survive 24 hours in ANY environment with nothing in your pockets. In the winter, you could hide under an evergreen, build a debris shelter, and do jumping jacks to keep from freezing. It wouldn't be comfortable by any means, but you could do it.

That's actually a pretty good amount of gear. You'll do fine. Get your mind right first. :)

enmoaz, i know i will do it ;)

i just don't like to talk about things like they've already happened...it takes the fun out of them and closes all posibilities for failure...

thanks guys, i'm pretty excited

In my opinion,that`s a kit that someone could realistically be carrying with them, good job! I look forward to hearing how it worked out for you.

Not to get off topic, but I agree with this 100%. I figure worse case scenario, I could pick a tree and walk around it all night at a pace that would keep me warm, but not let me sweat.

You can stuff a Fenix E01 light (1xAAA battery, very small) into that tin. 10 hours of non-dimming light is also useful... and it's under $20.

Looks like a solid setup. While I'm sure you will be able to get by no matter what, here's hoping that your 24 hour outing is not spent in the rain.

I'll be interested to hear what you end up doing to pass the time between necessary chores. Clearly, much of it will be spent enjoying your surroundings, but I suspect those knives will get some whittling time.

Good luck,

- Mike

mike, i think i might end up sneaking along a gouge chisel so that i can do some spoon carving. otherwise i might do some more exploring around the mountain; i haven't seen all of it yet. 90% chance of precip with temps around freezing is the prediction...i hope they are wrong...

gnius, i don't think i will take a light this time, but i will take a look at that light. sounds like a good little light.

thanks for the comments everyone.

by the way, if i can find my little tripod i think i might keep track of things video-diary style in addition to pics. i'm thinking that might help out some of the less experienced people, to actually see what going on instead of figuring out based on descriptions.

Hmmmmm .... Survivorman style .... I like that idea

Siguy - are you planning on setting up any traps ?

Maybe some snares or a figure 4 .... I would find that helpful.

Again good luck and hope the weather is not too bad.

Wear extra clothes. Sleeping in the cold is damn near impossible if you are shivering, not to mention having a cold for a week.

Kurupted, i don't know if i will actually set any, but i will probably carve some to pass the time...

JLouis, i will be dressed appropriately for the weather, which will eliminate alot of difficulty.

since it looks like it will be chilly and raining, i will be sure to wear clothing that will keep me warm and dry. i plan on building a bed and shelter to keep my warm and dry at night though...

It goes for 10 hours with a single AAA battery ???

:eek:

Maybe I should replace the MagLite Solitaire in my PSK with one of these ?
What do you guys think?

BTW - nive setup,Siguy!

If you do roll back to the house don't forget to put it in the video diary - and post it.. ; )
