Building a Survival Sheath (WIP)

Canadian money no longer works for tinder :( they changed from paper to a new synthetic to make the bills last longer. Its pretty much just plastic now.

So is Australian money. All plastic. Super hard to forge due to the complex patterns but not as flammable as US money that's made of paper infused with cotton. It will work though. Sort of like inner tube..

My sail needle came in the mail yesterday! It was actually one needle in a pack of 7 different "interesting" needles, so I actually used a strip of orange duct tape to secure the sail needle and a smaller "glover's needle" for more fine work. Also used a couple of the other straight needles in the set and taped some to the top of the FAK I carry in my EDC bag.

Sweet haul SP! That FAK? Keep it untouched in your pocket or with your main kit perhaps in another small MOLLE pouch on your belt/pack etc. Keeps FAKit whole and frees up space in your other tin.

Also, followed your advice on this BeeKay - had to swing by a smaller, national chain hardware store this afternoon after church to get a key cut and while I was there, I picked up a heavy duty cell phone pouch with a belt clip and D-ring on the back and a set of Nite Ize locking S-biners (I love Nite Ize gear) so I could clip the pouch with one of the S-biners to the ring on the dangler. I'll wait to post pics once the kit is complete.

I'm in that "so close yet so far" stage!

So, in taking a closer look at the phone case that I purchased for my FAK, there were a couple of smaller, very slim compartments in addition to the larger compartment. Took a Rite-In-The-Rain, staplebound notebook an disassembled it, cut the paper down to size, and slipped it into one of those compartments. There is also a loop for a pen/pencil so I may be adding a writing instrument at some point down the road. *sigh* I should have just built a new go bag....

Thanks bro. In hindsight I should've used something a little more coarse. I used 1200 grit. Unfortunately the blade wasn't overly sharp to begin with. Once I get a Work Sharp I'll get it off him and convex it.

Do you guys have army disposal stores in the US? We have em here in Aus. That's where I get things like pouches and webbing belts etc. I have a dedicated survival tin in a pouch I carry on my belt that has all of the things you mentioned in your list. It's purely as a backup in case I lose all my other gear.

All army surplus in my area have gone out of business, internet, and I figured it was the same in the rest of the states.

I've been busy on the big river tonight. En route over the next couple of weeks (getting free shipping means being patient):
1) Nite Ize carabiner light

So, when I ordered this, I failed to note that I was buying from a seller in China *sigh* it's on that slow boat, headed here - it left Zheng Zhou tonight. Slated to arrive sometime between October 7-26. Will pay more attention next time....

Also, while cleaning up in the garage recently, I found an old set of Allen wrenches. Going to salvage the 5/32" one out of the set and put it with this sheath so I can easily remove the scales, if necessary. May use a hack saw to trim it down slightly - still trying to decide.

Once the light gets here and I pick up the water purification tabs and get some safety pins out of my wife's sewing room, I'm going to call this "done" and get some more extensive pictures with the whole kit together, weight it, etc.

So still waiting for my light to get here, but got antsy about figuring out the weight, so I broke out the scale last night. Total weight, including the auxiliary pouch I added to keep the FAK intact, is 2 lbs, 11.3oz. By the time I add the light, the water purification tablets, and some cash, I think I'll still be under 3 lbs.

Man that setup is huge…I like it though! I've been enjoying reading thru your build SP. Hope you get your light soon so we can get some final pics with it strapped to your side. 3lbs shouldn't be too heavy; except you're gonna have to make a concerted effort not to be walking around in circles whilst in the bush [emoji3]

My light came today! So here is the (almost) completed setup! Still need to add water purification tablets and cash. There's also a trimmed down hex key in the tin now to remove the scales on my BK2 if necessary. Here's a pic of the assembled rig as it will sit until ready for use:

No time tonight to break the kit down for group shots of the components or to model it. I'll try to get that done before the weekend.

Once you wear it a bit you may find you really don't need para or a strap.

BeeKay you were dead on with this point. I wore it around the house without anything securing it to my thigh for probably an hour and a half tonight - no strap needed. It was quite comfortable and allowing it to swing freely made it easy to move out of the way when sitting, bending, etc.

After wearing it around for a bit tonight, it doesn't feel as huge as it looks. Quite comfortable actually.

As far as walking in circles - that's what trail markers are for! [emoji6]

So I'm glad I didn't buy my water purification tablets when I originally planned. Went out to the mailbox this morning (forgot to check it yesterday) and I had a $10 Happy Birthday coupon from a major sporting goods retail chain! A $15 purchase turned into a $5 purchase and I have a 30-pack of Katadyn Micropur MP1 tablets! I'll throw a couple in this kit and several in my water/cooking kit that I'm about to start building.
