I'm new to bladesmithing and have really taken a tremendous liking for it. I started with a small coffee can forge with a regular propane burner from homedepot that gets the job done to an extent. Now I'm looking to upgrade and really put in the time in to hone the craft. I've cut up and welded up a propane tank to make a new gas forge and looking to use kaowool or similar material then coat with high temp ceramic. I can't seem to find a reliable source to purchase them as well what's the best way to accomplish it. My plan is the put 2in thick ceramic blanket around the inside then coat with santinite or itc-100 then use a high temp fire brick as the floor. If anyone can help with their experience in the matter and a reliable source to purchase all supplies needed it would be very much appreciated. I'm still not certain how to post pics so if anyone can help out I will add pics of work done as well as the new forge I've started. Thanks

Your forge sounds like our designs. ours are about 1/3 longer than a typical BBQ fueltank. Knives are a sideline to our regular forgework. We run blown forges & average 3000 hours out of a forge before it needs rebuilding, but varies alot on how carefully its treated & even things like local climate affect.
Anyway, I use Dempsys Forge as a supplier. I dunno if its the best price or anything, just reliable & provides alot of free help to small time forge operators. I will take my business to him.

Right on man I'll check it out thanks for the help. I appreciate the feed back.

You put 1/4" of satanite over the wool, then after curing the satanite, paint on a coating of ITC-100. Get enough to do the forge (half-pint for your size) and paint it on in thin layers, letting dry between coats, until it is all on the forge.

That would be awesome man. I've been learning on my own with help from YouTube and reading as much as I can to figure it out. Some guidance would be greatly appreciated.
