hey all,

so im thinking about building a pair of scissors, and was to lazy to search the forums for any info. i have seen some on the web (pics) of damascus ones but very few.

i was figuring on making the handles each out of high content nickle damascus, and duck bill welding in possibly 01, or 1080 for the blades. or just making them entirley out of pattern welded steel.

i planned on just hammering them down into bar stock, surface grinding them to the same thickness and then shaping by stock removal.

anyone every built a pair? i'd like to see pics if anyone has any.......promise not to copy your designs;)

any helpful info would be appreciated.

Interesting topic. I am interested in the comments. I know there are some scissor makers on the forums. I would especially like information/opinions on -
Edge angle?
Tension spring on the pivot?
Serrated edge on one blade?
Most useful edge length?

My son is a hairdresser now, and is starting to teach at a local cosmetology university ( They used to just call them Beauty Schools....but now they are universities!)
For his birthday in June,I have thought of making him a super pair of styling scissors. I was thinking stainless damascus handles with removable Cowry-X blades. The hardness will be about Rc65-67. I can make a batch of these blades and he can change them as needed ( three screws per blade). Sharpening the blades will be easy on a diamond lap. I am doing some sketches and will get with David at GLWJ.

What I have so far is:
The basic profile design for the frame
Thin blades with an edge of 45 degrees ( maybe some at other angles for specific hair needs).
Slightly hollow ground mating surface with just 2-3mm at the edges lapped to absolutely flat ( the 'set' will come when the blade is installed).
Maybe one blade serrated?

the blades on scissors are also slightly radiused, so that when in use only a small area of the blade is in contact with the other blade.

Yes, that is what it is.

stacy, is that something easier bought, or just made from flat stock,

i know im making a hammer spring at the moment, coil spring from (.033)piano wire, i made one and to test out if it hardened ok.......i water quenched it after heating with a pencil torch and i just crushed it to pieces between my fingers, hard as heck, it haden't came out right so i experimented with it.
ill be sure to temper the next one:thumbup:

You could certainly make one, but springs are easily purchased in most any size and pressure desired.
