Building up existing scales - questions from a Newbie

I have a Marttini full tang knife wherein the scales are flush with the tang. I have an Ontario sword from the 1990s that is also full tang. The "scales" are simply or is simply 550 paracord wrapped around the tang.

I cannot replace the scales on the knife and the paracord is the scales on the sword. I want to build up the grip or scales. I thought of using black electrical tape or possibly closed foam taped down. Then, I decided to ask the pros out here for their suggestions on materials to build up the grips.

What would be your suggestions. And, thank you.

I'm definitely not a "pro," but on the sword, I would either use some kind of plasti dip, or make an epoxy handle like this guy. No idea about what to do on the Marttini.
